Referral to ENT for lump in neck

Hi..

I went to the GP today as I kept feeling my neck and convinced myself that there was a lump bigger on the left side compared to the right and subsequently couldn't spot prodding and poking and working myself up.
I went today to seek some reassurance but instead my GP said he felt 2 lumps and had to refer me (2 weeks) to the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for an ultra sound.

He did say he was 99% sure it was my lymph nodes and not cancerous but I'm so worried.
my symptoms also include the 'frog in throat' sensation and a few aches and pains in my neck.

anyone else going through or been through something similar?

  • Hi Ali783,

This sounds like good news in that the doctor seems positive but also you're getting a referral which means you'll know for sure soon.

I'm sure there will be others here who have been through or are going through something similar, so if anyone has any experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

Otherwise, I hope it's not too much longer to wait for you.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi Ali,

i am going throught the same same thing at the moment and I feel your pain it’s the waiting that is the worst.  If your gp has told you he’s almost certain it’s ok I wouldn’t worry too much.  I had an ultrasound which showed the lump and that it was not a cyst then went onto have an FNA which showed some good cells and some bad cells (what that means I’m not sure) but came back inconclusive.  Yesterday I had an MRI scan and am booked in for a core biopsy soon in 10 days.  They are so thorough and the nurse told me they check everything just in case which is a really good thing.  Good luck I’m sure you won’t need it

  • Thanks for replying Nikki. I hope all your tests come back ok. Sounds like they're very thorough. Let me know how you get on. Good luck.

  • Hi Ali,

How're you doing? Any update since your last post?
I'm going through very similar at the moment - I've a right-sides lump though on my thyroid and swollen lymph nodes on that side. Waiting for a date for a scan and FNA.

    All the best

  • Hi Shazzi, I have had appt come thought for next Thursday. So pretty quick. Hoping they have the answer there and then but it seems like others in this situation go through multiple tests and scan over a number of weeks

i keep prodding and picking my neck so it's becoming really sore! Sometimes I think it feels normal and then sometimes I don't and totally freak out!

what does your lump feel like? Mine is hard and round but it feels like it's attached to something, maybe it's my thyroid too?

hope you don't have to wait too long for your appt x

  • That's fab that you've got an appointment through and it's soon. Fingers crossed they can reassure you then.

Mine seems to be much the same as yours; hard and fairly round. Mine is around 2.5cm in diameter though obviously that's what I'm guesstimating seeing it from the outside.. does yours move when you swallow? Mine does so that's why they're thinking thyroid.

I'm with you with the poking and prodding LOL. And I'm bouncing from worrying about whether or not it's grown to maybe it's shrinking and I'm overreacting...

    Keep us updated please :)

  • Sure yours will come through soon, did you get a 2 week referral?

So can you see your lump from the outside? yes mine goes up when I swallow then back down but I have a similar lump on the other side! It is above the Adam's apple?

Also feel like I have a constant frog in my throat have you got any other symptoms?

  • Yea, I'm on the 2 week pathway so hopefully I'll hear something next week.

It sounds like it could be your thyroid.. it's runs either side of your Adam's apple. Have you had bloods done to check thyroid function?

I feel like I've had a sore throat that won't go away, constant brain fog (shocking memory and like I can't concentrate), tiredness and palpitations.

    xx

  • No I didn't have any bloods done. My doctor didn't really ask me any questions either just said we'd better get it checked out but he said it was probably my lumpnodes but it seems strange to me that if he thought that he then sends me for a 2 ww referral!

My lump is above my Adam's apple to the right and there is a small lump at the same place on the other side. Honestly am getting obessed - was in a meeting at work earlier and someone asked me if I was alright because I kept pushing and prodding my neck

seems like the majority of chats on here re this kind of issue and symptoms isn't cancer but it's hard not to think the worst!

Hope you manage to enjoy the weekend. Wine is helping me a lot

  • Bonkers that he wouldn't suggest doing bloods to rule out hypo/hyperthyroidism first. Might be worth asking for it?

Haha! Honestly I'm the same! Wine definitely helps - I've a bottle in that I plan to not have by tomorrow lol.

Friends and family keep telling me it's not cancer but I think until I see a clear biopsy result page, I'm not going to be able to chill. Fingers crossed next weekend we're both a bit more clued up on what's going on. Xx
