The two week urgent referral is standard NHS guidance on certain health problems so it's not unusual. You will get that appointment and if one isn't free in your area another hospital can be recommended. Hope all goes well. Carol
Thank you. I'm so anxious. The day after my doctors appointment they sent me a letter with a cancer booklet thing in, do they do this with everyone ? Or only if they suspect it
Hi. Can I ask what you've been referred for?
I was referred on a 2ww suspected lung cancer yesterday and got a call today to book me a CT scan for Thurs. They said I need not see a consultant unless there's something on CT that needs further looking at.
Depending on what department you've been referred to I understand it would take different lengths of time.
If there were tests that look like they would be advisable they may phone to book these quite quickly like mine. It depends on what you've been referred for.
I was very surprised to get a call today
With regards to the booklet that is probably down to individual gp practices. They have to make sure you understand why you've had the 2ww referral. Maybe it's part of that. Could have given it to you at appointment so you could ask more then. Maybe call the GP?
The waiting is horrible

Hi thanks for replying. Sorry to hear your news I hope everything turns out well ! I had bleeding when I went to the toilet, blood in my poo and pains, hot sweats and tired all the time. The doctor mentioned me having the camera done to check my bowels but I'm trying to think positive. I am 29 so I've heard it's unlikely but I've also seen so many comments about young people having bowel cancer. I have a 2 year old and I'm just so scared incase he ends up having no mam. I know I'm probably thinking too much but My anxiety is ridiculous xx
Very unlikely yes but I understand what a worry it is.
I've had blood in my poo several times over the years and have had 2 colonoscopies so if you do have one and you want to talk to someone about that feel free to friend me on here and we can talk more directly.
I got the all clear for bowel cancer both times but they found diverticular disease which is nothing to worry about. It can flare up if you get an infection. One of several bowel conditions that can cause pain, inflammation and some bleeding.
I can't get over you getting that booklet in the post. I personally think that's awful and kind of scaremongering
You may get a phone call to book you in for a colonoscopy without seeing anyone first. If so, like I said, I'm more than happy to talk to you about the procedure. Don't read any stories online. Only bad experiences make the cut and they are infrequent. Get sedated if possible rather than gas and air is my main advice.
I am sure you will be ok. How long has this been happening to you?
A x
Ah thanks so much. It's been on and off for about a year now ! It's quite a lot of blood. If I have to have the colonoscopy I will message you. Thanks
Hello,
as previous posts have suggested, blood in the stools can be caused by several other things, especially if its bright red. When l spotted blood in my stool, it was dark, almost black and intermittant so with stale blood l l was aware that it was likely to be a tumour, which proved to be the case. This was the first blood l had ever spotted
my own thoughts is that if you have been bleeding for a year with fresh blood its likely a colonoscopy will show something other than a cancer, but l am no expert, just a survivor.
Try not too worry since stress is often more problematic than the condition, and you cannot do anything to change the original condition, but you can add to it.Calmness and positivity are your bodies best friends at this stage of your journey.
Good luck with tests and positive results
Hi Gruntifen,
What were your symptoms if you don't mind me asking? I'm suffering from severe anxiety thinking I've got bowel cancer. I've never had blood in my poo but have had inconsistent bowels for about 7 weeks now, nausea and vomiting for a week and really bad and uncomfortable rectal pressure for almost 2 weeks. Feeling the need to constantly have a bowel movement but can hardly produce one, and when I do it is such a small amount and pencil thin. Also lots of mucus :( I'm worried sick. I have been referred through 2ww but I am still waiting for my call and it has been a week today that I have been referred. The waiting game is awful.
Kit
Hi Kit. I totally agree that waiting for a confirmed diagnosis is awful. Really struggling to keep emotions in check and don't want to speak to anyone until I know what I am dealing with. If you don't mind me asking have you had stool sample analysed? I am hoping that will confirm one way or another .... but maybe not!!
Ashley
Hello,
From what you describe it is obvious that you have an inflamed restricted bowel, this would explain thin stools and the urge to keep going.l had normal stools,no urge to keep going and certainly no mucus whatsoever, entirely normal, but the stale blood was the giveaway.
There are plenty of other chronic bowel conditions that can give you the symptoms that you are suffering, and all of them will present with more acute symptoms from a raised level of anxiety and stress acting as the trigger. You will not change the outcome by worrying, but you can affect the severity of the condition, and at the moment it is the only one thing you can make a positive difference too, so l am very sorry but thats in your hands and mind. In my case l accepted the worst case scenario within days, and felt l had better get on and make the most of the time left to me, at that point all the worry and stress lifted.Your mind is an exceptionally powerful force, destructive or constructive, your choice,
David
