First Haematology appointment

My mum has been sent for x-ray, had blood tests and results show a fluctuating bone marrow, she now has an appointment with the haematology dept at hospital. Should I be going with her for this appointment? Not sure if this could be serious?

  • Hello.
This is my first time here.
don't know if this would help much but I have a blood disorder called von willebrand. My first heamotology appointment I felt was very important. As they explained everything and did blood tests etc.
so if your very involved it's probably best too

  • Hi Scozzie

I went with my mum a few years ago and it was a blessed relief to her that I went. We walked into a clinic that had Macmillan posters on the walls. We got called in. The consultant started to talk about mum and her blood cancer as though she/we already knew! I had to ask the consultant to stop, told her we knew nothing of this and she was mortified that we didn’t know. It turned out they’d sent a letter (which we were shown on screen) to moms GP outlining their request for mom to be gently told by him that she would be attending the oncology clinic, as tests showed that she has low grade Myeloma.

The consultant apologised and began to explain about mums Myeloma. I asked about treatment and the consultant said no treatment was necessary yet.

Mums Myeloma is no worse than when she was first diagnosed a few years ago. She also has a heart condition called Atrial Fibrillation, leaking valves  which can’t be repaired as she’s not strong enough and fragile osteoporosis.

I would suggest that please go with your mum but I can’t tell you what to do. All I can do is share my experience

  • Thanks for sharing mum has just been diagnosed with Myeloma also and was the right thing to go along with her

  • Hi [@Scozzie]‍

I’m so glad that you were able to be with your mom. If you want to chat I’m more than happy to offer any experience although everyone is individual. Sending you a big hug

  • My mum now has to consider treatment for her multiple myeloma as her blood tests are showing increased calcium and paraprotein - she has also been diagnosed with melanoma on her face, and awaiting results of a 2nd biopsy and skin graft. During the scans they also found a menginoma brain tumour. She has had a  minor stroke - knee fracture. A challenging time.
