I'm 49, I came off HRT in November (been on this for 20+ years) due to the MHRA & GP guidance, had a bone scan in December and I have been diagnosed with Osteopenia. On the off chance examined my breasts in November - I don't do this often just because I have cysts in them anyway & they change I found a new one, I left it 6 weeks (to see if they changed) and then went to the Drs for a 2W referral for lump examination.
For 2 weeks I have told myself their just cysts nothing to worry about but best get them checked to calm the nerves! This worked a treat and really calmed me down!
Today was my 2W refferal to the breast unit, consultant examined my and took down my family history (maternal grandmother died of breast ca 69 years, paternal aunt died of breast ca 54 years, paternal grandmother died of ovarian ca at 65), he marked one breast with a circle at the site of the lump and I just happened to mention this lumpy bit in my other breast - examined this and marked it with an X. Mammogram performed, and then the Ultrasound was done.
The one that i thought was a little suspect was fine just cysts, however the other side was a different matter .... They tried to do a fine needle aspirate but it was solid so they did a core biopsy. On my notes they wrote "suspicious ?fibroadenoma".
Met with the registrar and they said that they suspect it is a fibroadenoma but need confirmation from the biopsy before diagnosing. I'm a scientist working in Clinical Research in Oncology, so I know that 80% of the lumps biopsied are fibroadenomas but I thought they could make a definitive diagnosis just from the ultrasound ... which has left me completely confused ... the next 2 weeks are going to be hell ... I could tell myself its just a fibroadenoma, benign and absolutely fine ... but my mind is telling me otherwise because of the language they used .... the menopausal symptoms aren't helping either hot flushes, not sleeping, planning my wedding in May, moving house before the wedding and now this :( Please tell me others are in the same situation? Have people been told its a suspect fibroadenoma but its actually a carcinoma?
Sorry - my brain is doing overtime :(
