Colon polyp found

I had blood in my stool and so was sent for a flexible sigmoidoscopy. They found a few small hemmorhoids and a small polyp and one large polyp which almost entirely blocked the colon. The endoscopist stopped the procedure as he couldn’t get the scope past it and I will be going back ASAP for a full colonoscopy plus some additional blood tests. He mentioned it was at least 3cm wide. It was bright red and angry looking and there was a lot of blood visible on screen

My question is what will happen next? Is it likely to be malignant? Does having these two mean there may be more further up the colon?

I’m a bit shocked by the finding so any advice would be great. Thanks!

  • Thought I'd post again in case anyone comes across this post in the future.

I had the Colonoscopy yesterday. The large polyp they found previously and one other large polyp were removed fully and will be sent for examination but the doctor said they are most probably benign which is a relief. I have quite a few smaller polyps which need removing so I have to have another colonoscopy in around 8 weeks to sort them.

The experience was pretty unpleasant and uncomfortable if I'm honest. It took an hour for the procedure overall and I've been very bloated since but the doctor said it was almost certain that one of the polyps would have become cancerous before I reached the normal bowel cancer screening age so it was totally worth it!

If you have blood in your stool, go to your GP and get it investigated regardless of your age would be my advice. I'm 30 so the chances of having bowel cancer were very low but removing polyps at an early stage will protect you from developing bowel cancer in future so having a slightly embarassing and uncomfortable procedure is 100% worth it.

  • Really glad you've got sorted. Did you have any other symptoms other than the blood? I'm expecting to be referred for a colonoscopy later today.

  • The blood was the main one that worried me but I also had pain in my stomach and changeable bowel habits from diarrhea to constipation. When I was constipated and did manage to go it was really thin so I knew there was something in there that was blocking the way.

I read your other post and it sounds really similar to my symptoms! I definitely know how you're feeling. A colonoscopy or a flexible sigmoidoscopy (which is the same thing as a colonoscopy but it just goes half way around your colon) will definitely give you a better idea of what's going on. I had about 2 weeks to wait for my flexible sigmoidoscopy when I was reffered by the GP and then when they found the polyp, it was another 2.5 weeks until the colonoscopy although a lot of times they can sort polyps just with the flexible sigmoidoscopy so you might not need both.

  • Thank you for your post. I am right now waiting for the second procedure, also have a 3cm thing. I have found it all very painful so hope next time more sedation. Your post is reassuring though. Thanks again.

  • Hi everyone, I had a colonoscopy back in 2017, they removed 5 small polys 2mm in size, 4 of them were pre cancerous, due to covid I had my next check up colonoscopy on 2nd August 2022, again 2 small polyps removed and multiple biopsies taken ?, they called me back for another colonoscopy on Saturday 20th August, where they found a 30mm polyp which they couldn't remove during the colonoscopy, I've been referred for surgery to have it removed, has anyone experienced this ? I can't sleep at night or function as I'm terrified the biopsies or large polyp are cancerous, take care Nicky

  • Hi Nicky,  I have similar thing to you. I was very worried but have been told it is very unikelu that even if there's cancer, it has spread.  I will go in this week- good luck to you and let us knkw

  • Hiya

  • Hi

I had Colonscopy in 2017 and it showed

    diverticulitis.

diarrhoea. Keeping me awake most nights

I just got result from GP QFIT test was positive

Did you have any symptoms like me

I'm soo worried. I've let this go on thinking it was flare up

    of diverticulitis..

  • Hi Nicky

could you tell me your symptoms please xx

I've just got a positive Qfit test

    And im soo worried

  • Hi Rosie, to be honest it was a routine colonoscopy after having precancerous polyps removed in 2017, however for the last 8weeks or so I've had lots of blood in my stools, mucus in my stool, I've completely lost my appetite, I'm tired and lethargic most of the time ( I put a lot of this down to menopause I'm nearly 50), I phoned the hospital today and biopsies are taking 6-8weeks to come back !!! I don't stop thinking about what the results will be, on my previous colonoscopy 3 weeks ago the notes were, multiple biopsies taken which require further investigation? I'm booked in for Friday 16th September to have the 30mm polyp removed (we go on holiday Saturday coming to Turkey so can't be done before), I'm absolutely terrified, haven't told my grown up children as don't want to worry them unless I have to, my husband very supportive, have you had a colonoscopy recently xx
