subungual melanoma

Hi. So i went to have my nails done yesterday when the beauty therapist saw the line on my nail. Iv had it over a year but i had no idea that it was a sign of a possible issue, i thought it was a pigmant or damaged nail. The lady then explained what the line can mean and that i need to get it seen by the GP and that she couldnt carry on with my nail treatment. I was hocked but totally fine and was so greatful she saw it and said something to me. So this morning i saw the nurse who made me an urgent 2 week appointment so im at the hospital on the 12th Feb. But im now panicing so much that iv left it for over a year. I have a 11week old baby and a 5 year old so i dont know what to expect at this hospital appointment can anyone tell me what happens?

  • Hi,

It's so good that your beauty professional recognised this & that your GP nurse has referred you. Subungal melanoma is not common, it only accounts for 1% of melanoma diagnoses, so hopefully your nail problem is being caused by a fungal infection or trauma.

The dermatologist will examine the nail and decide if it needs further investigation. This is usually done by taking a sample of the nail bed for biopsy. They may do it at the appointment or arrange for you to return. There are a few people on this forum who have had this procedure - if you search 'nail' or 'subungal' and you will see previous posts that may help.

Please try not to panic, there may be a simple explanation for this but it needs checking out. Try to distract yourself whilst waiting for the appointment & don't Google as the information is behind the times and will just frighten you.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

how did you get on with this.
I have a similar experience now although I saw mine and thought it was just some kind of trauma for way over a year. I have my appointment with a dermatologist in Tuesday
