Shocked by referral to the breast clinic

Hi, sorry for the long post but not got anyone to talk too about this,

So went to my gp about something totally different but as I was leaving she asked was there anything else so I mentioned a rash, and burning sensation and itchy breast my left, and I thought I had been a bit rough scratching as it was now very tender and swollen. So I was expecting her to say heres some hydrocortisone and send me on my way that's when things got unreal she asked to examine me. On examination she looked at my "rash" and asked if the ridges on the underside of my breast were new which they are -I thought they were because of the rash, and she also noticed some changes around my nipple which again are new and some crusty discharge. Whilst examining me she mentioned that she could definitely feel a fullness to my left breast and I needed to be referred to the breast team and will be seen within 2-3weeks at this point I wasn't really paying attention and told her that its bound to be a cyst and left

The next day went to work and told my manager so they know to expect the appointment and she asked did I need anything, and wow it hit me!

So I googled it, now I wish I didn't, I don't want to tell anyone I've been referred as don't want to worry them over something that is probably nothing but can't help worrying I have young children one of whom has additional needs so I'm finding I'm crying when I'm on my own.

Has anyone been referred with these symptoms?

I have always thought I knew what to look for, a lump but not all of the symptoms I have, I feel stupid what if the doctor hadn't asked if there was anything else, I would have carried on not realising that I have symptoms I should be looking out for

  • Hi nurse 2013

Sorry, it must have all been quite a shock to you. Especially when it's not why you went to see the gp.

I too am waiting for my breast clinic appointment. I saw my gp last week. My appointment has come through for next Tuesday afternoon. I am very nervous but have been before when I was found to have a cyst. I don't have the same symptoms as you except a very full feeling. Looks bigger than my other boob too. I have a new lump low in my right breast that feels sharp when touched.

I know it's hard not to worry. Just try and keep as busy as you can.

    xx

  • Hi Betty-Lou,

Thanks for your reply, luckily it's my daughter's birthday this weekend so she is having a sleepover so I've got that to keep me occupied.

Yes mine looks bigger too, but cannot feel a lump. I too have a very sharp pain if any pressure is put on my breast just below my nipple, hoping it's a cyst and they will drain it at the clinic even considering anything else at the moment just sets me off crying.

I'm so sorry that this will be your second visit to a clinic, hoping it will be good news for you again

    Xx

  • Hi,

I am going to my GP on Monday for these exact symptoms my nerves are through the roof and I'm also trying not to cry the whole time! How long have you had the rash and other symptoms?

You will likely have an answer from the breast clinic before me, so I'd like to hear that, and hopefully good news for both of us!

    Best wishes

  • Hi so12

Well the rash, itching and changes to my skin I've had for about 5 weeks, the burning, fullness and pain about 2 weeks.

I'm glad you have thought to get these checked out!

I will post what happens with me and yes hopefully good news for both of us

    Xx
