Abnormal cervical smear

Hi, just wandering if anyone has been through this before ...

I had a routine smear test post baby in march, I never received any results and did not think anything of it until I got a letter through saying I should have booked a smear test and I hadn't. When I rang the doctors they said my test results was abnormal and I should have received a letter from cytology telling me to book a repeat smear 6 months after which I hadn't received. I had my repeat smear monday. The nurse was concerned as as she said my cervix was very red and bled when touched, she said it could just be cervical ectropian. She then called the doctor in to see, the doctor looked and stated it was quite large but it probably is cervical ectropian but to be safe she has referred me for a colposcopy. I informed them I also have brown discharge randomly while taking the pill but this has always been normal for me as I take the pill continually. However I have been having blood when wiping after sexual intercourse.

My concern is nothing was mentioned about any ectropian when I had a smear test in march so I can only imagine everything looked relatively normal then and is it normal for cervical ectropian to become large within 9 months? Or is this more likely a sign of cervical cancer.

I am 29 years old.

  • Hi Stacey

sorry you’ve had this issue, looks like miscommunication somewhere.

I was called back for a repeat smear when I was 19 20 years ago, I had the same as you, bleeding after sex and brown discharge shortly after I’d had my baby.

I had pre cancerous cells on my cervix CIN3 which were found during colonoscopy and were lasered away there and then. I’ve had a smear every year since and all been clear fortunately.

It sounds like cervical ectropian to me as cervical cancer takes years to become so, It can also be easily missed and as a recall they take a closer look. Try not to worry

  • Hi,

I know this was a while ago but I'm just wondering how you got on? I have had a very similar experience (I'm even the same age) and I'm worried sick waiting for my smear results. I have to wait to see if I am HPV positive or negative before being referred for a colposcopy but won't find out for 3 weeks and I'm struggling to cope with the wait.

Thanks so much I hope you're ok ️
