Hi
I'm hoping to understand experiences of diagnosing lung cancer. My Dad had kidney cancer 5 years ago and after 1 kidney removal was cancer free. He's since been diagnosed with COPD (he was a heavy smoker for 40 years including cigars) but it's not severe, however in July 2018 he was very poorly with aspirate pneumonia. Following this his health has deteriorated and for the last year he's had repeated chest infections that have got worse each time to the point he's had 25 litres of antibiotics! We've not had great care from the hospital and his consultant is now in hospital himself so communication has been poor but his last steer was that Dad either had a severe infection or cancer. Since then we've looked at his latest discharge papers which show his latest CT scan results - multiple nodules in lungs which is likely metastatic, and rogue cells in the kidney. Can we find anyone to talk to about this?!
The nurse my Mum did manage to speak to was quite flippant and suggested if he didn't have any symptoms they weren't worried. He has so many symptoms, wet cough, can't walk more than 10 yards without fighting for breath, falling asleep all the time even mid conversation, now being sick every other day. Another trip to the doctors and they want to do an endoscopy. I understand he doesn't have any specific tumour showing up but I am of the understanding that doesn't necessarily mean it's not cancer.
I'm worried that he's not getting any holistic care and everything's being treated individually, and I'm also worried he's potentially got lung and kidney cancer and no one is looking at how to treat this. I have 2 young sons who adore their Grandad and I want us to have as long as we can with him.
Has anyone got any experience of this that could offer any advice or similar stories? I'm realistic that it doesn't look good but am hopeful that knowing how others may have coped/dealt with this might help us understand what to expect.
Sorry for the long message and thanks for reading.
A very worried daughter.
