Swollen Lymph nodes in neck

Hi all,

I know none of you are professional doctors and nurses but I'm seriously worrying and reading discussions on here have helped me a lot. So on the 14th December 2019 I was diagnosed with a throat infection, I was struggling to swallow, tonsils were covered in white and swollen and it was at this point I noticed a lump in my neck (assumed it was swollen lymph nodes due to infection). So after finishing the antibiotics which was a 5 day course, I still felt quite ill. Throat still sore but not AS bad and it continued to be "achey" for about 2 weeks which wasn't normal so I went back to the GP who told me it was still red but no white spots so it's fine, also felt my neck said he could feel my glands swollen but leave it 2 weeks and come back if there's no change. I went back as there was no change and I saw a lady doctor who said oh they're huge they need looking at and referred me for an urgent ultrasound on them and blood tests. I went for blood tests the following morning and got the results 4 days later which were completely normal, except my iron was abit low but GP said it was not drastically low and could be fixed by adding more iron into my diet.

So fast forward to today, my throat is starting to be sore again! And she wanted to see me again to see what's happening (the Gp). She felt my neck again and said they feel like they're not as big, I told her my throat is sore again so she looked and said it's very red, angry and has a few small white spots so has prescribed a 10 day course of antibiotics. I told her my scan is next Monday and she was going to send me to hospital to have the scan but with it being in 6 days she would leave it.

I'm SO worried I have cancer. Lymphoma. I have a 2 year old little girl and the thought of not watching her grow up is literally soul destroying. I think the doctor has scared me more than google, although I know she's just being thorough which is better than brushing things off.

I don't know what I want people to say really. I just feel like waiting around is killing me. I keep having moments where I just sit and cry and beg to nobody that there's nothing seriously wrong with me.

  • Hi. Sorry to hear you are struggling with this, hopefully I can reassure you somewhat!

Your symptoms sound completely infection-related if I'm honest.... You have a throat infeciton, which is why your glands swelled up. You then went back and the glands have reduced in size (which wouldn't happen if it was cancer!) but your throat is still sore, meaning that your first course of antibiotics didn't get rid of the infection....therefore your glands are going to stay swollen until the infection has gone. I would be extremely surprised if you had any form of cancer. Bear in mind also, that glands can often stay swollen for months even years after an infection. I had to have a biopsy in the big one I have in my neck as I was worried about it (it's been there 11 years since a throat infection I had), and it's just tissue!

Try not to worry. Your GP sounds amazing to be honest I wish more were like her! She is just being thorough! Although admittedly requesting an urgent ultrasound following a throat infection does sound a bit dramatic, she is just covering all bases and probably could sense your anxiety so wants to put your mind at rest! Also ultrasound isn't just for lumps etc it can pick up infection related issues too.

Anyway I just wanted to reassure you a little bit ok, hope this helps!!

  • Thank you for replying!
im so glad to hear yours was tissue. I bet you were so relieved!
I think they've stayed the same size but the GP seems to think they have reduced. There's one on the side of my neck I can feel just by brushing my fingers over my skin, but she was more worried about one under my chin which she says is abnormally big and hard. All I've done for about 2 weeks now is google and relate to all sorts of symptoms I'm driving myself crazy! And things I've had for a long time (back ache since having my little girl) I'm starting to think oh my goodness what if this was a symptom all along and I've had something serious all this time! Oh lord, my health anxiety has got out of control

  • Update:

been for ultrasound on my neck this morning, was told lymph nodes look like regular reactive nodes and can't see anything we should worry about. Full scan results will be sent to my GP and will be going Friday to hear the full result but feel better after what was said today.

Thought id update for anyone who's sitting and googling and comes across this. Because that's exactly what I did.

  • Hey,

Have the lymph nodes changed in size since ?

  • Hi there hope you are well.

sorry to hear of your condition but glad it was just tissue.

I am 27 and have an enlarged lymphnode on the right side of my neck so its like a lump. Ultrasound scan was done but doctor could not identify the cause so have referred me to do biopsy to find out exactly why it has enlarged.

I am really nervous about the biopsy, they said they will put a small needle in my lump and collect tissue did they do the same for you? Was it painful and did you have any side effects?

Any information will be helpful please.

  • Hello, no worries at all!

Please don't worry. Honestly. Most of the time lymph nodes swell because of a viral infection or something that your body hasn't agreed with and they react. Sometimes they swell and never go down again, which is the case with me.  Is your lymph node really hard or soft? does it move about a bit when you press on it? If so then I am certain it's nothing to worry about. But even if it isn't that doesn't mean it's cancer! Sometimes nodes feel hard and fixed but just due to a local infection. The one on my neck still hasn't

gone away and it's been about 12 or something years now.
Please don't worry about the biopsy, I barely felt it, felt like a slight sharp feeling but it didn't hurt AT ALL. I had zero side effects.

good luck and let me know how you get on!

  • I agree Butterfly 1987

I have had a lump on my neck for years too.  It only gets slightly bigger if I have an infection, but nothing that alarms me in any way.

Good advice you have given to Kutty06 !

  • Hi I noticed I had a lump/lymph node under my chin the day I started feeling unwell. Flu symptoms along with chest infection. I aas given antibiotics amoxicillin for 1 week course 3 times a day. I started feeling better after a week and completed my aniltibiotics. I have noticed that the lump has gone down but feel there is slightly little feeling of it being present.

  • Hi I was wondering how you got on with your biopsy I have a lump on the right side of my neck it's not painful but it is moveable I have my ultrasound next week and I'm absolutely terrified

  • Hi,  first you will have a ultra sound, if the doctor sees something that is unexplained them a fine needle aspiration. Will be done to rake a biopsy. Most of the time you have several lymph nodes which are reactive which doesn't do anything. They see everywhere I'm your body also. The scan will give you a better understanding
