Colon cancer at 32???

I have recently received a positive QFit test result and have been been scheduled in for a colonoscopy next week.

I was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia in September, after that I noticed blood mixed through my stool but have no other symptoms other thank slight cramping in my lower abdomen.

I am stressing myself out and have read all sorts on google that keeps coming to the same conclusion. I can't sleep thinking about it and feel like I'm knocking myself ill.

Has anyone else had an experience similiar? ... am I getting myself unnecessarly worked up?

  • Hello,

I'm 30 and going through similar things at the moment. I have blood in my stool and have just been diagnosed with iron deficiency and my only other symptom is some lower abdomen pain. I have a sigmoidoscopy scheduled for 2 weeks time.

After going through something similar back in 2018 when a benign tumour was discovered in my calf, I think my main advice would be to stop googling stuff. It only ever brings up the worst possible outcomes. It's definitely easier said than done but trying to avoid it is definitely helpful I reckon.

My GP said the symptoms could be caused by a bunch of different things other than cancer from inflamation, IBD, IBS etc. The chances of having cancer when aged under 50/60 is super low apparently so I'm just trying to keep reminding myself of that.

Hope the test goes well next week!

  • Hi, sorry to hear about your worries, may I ask why the QFit rest was arranged? I would try not to worry...I've read online that only 3% of people who have the stool test have colon cancer. It's probably just a polyp!

I understand how you must be feeling though, as I'm I n the exact same boat! I'm also 32. I have a beautiful amazing 11 year old son and an incredible partner, we live in our own wonderfully happy bubble and I just can't even begin to bear the prospect of having the big C. I always end up thinking the worst so we have that in common! I'm that person who thinks if I do have C I will have the most advanced aggressive kind etc etc lol! I saw my consultant yesterday & he's scheduled a colonoscopy for next Tuesday 21st....

I'm absolutely terrified....nervous enough about the test but more so scared about what will be found. Basically I have a huge mass right up high up in my rectum. I discovered it myself after not being able to bear the anxiety and feeling like something was just 'not right' up there, so I just had a feel about myself lol!

My symptoms are detailed in my other posts but they are incomplete evacuation every time I go to the loo, urges to go but nothing there or only little amounts come out, deep pain in lower abdomen and in my right side, pressure / dull ache feelings inside my bum, intermittent diarreah/constipation, and intermittent bleeding whenever I pass a big/hard stool. The biggest thing I am struggling with though is the 24/7 nausea... it's there basically all the time! It's affecting my appetite too which makes me think my liver is affected :(

I've now noticed a few swollen nodes all over and feelings of faintness and extreme tiredness. My blood results last week were fine though but I read somewhere that cancer doesn't always show up on bloods unless your anemic? (which I'm not). This last week I have started to feel very very unwell, exhaustion etc, funny feelings in my chest and breathing feels off sometimes. I am just worried sick!

Anyway sorry to rant on...just so you know you're not alone in all this, I hear ya, and don't think for a minute you are working yourself up! It's completely normal and expected to think the worst! We all do it! Hopefully your colonoscopy is clear, it's more than likely just a case of IBS or something else rather minor! Keep us posted.

    good luck!!!!

  • Hi!,

Thank you so much for your reply and it helps to know I'm not the only one going through this!.

I had to do the QFit due to the blood through my stool and when it came back positive they arranged the colonoscopy.

I'm the exact same when it comes to this, I go from zero to 100,000,000 in 5 seconds. However, you may be feeling the nausea cos you're worried?, when I get myself worked up I can make myself physically sick. Please don't think I'm trying to take away from your symptoms.

I hope all goes well for you on the 21st

  • Hi,

I've worked as an Endoscopy Nurse for some time and now work as a Specialist Nurse for bowel cancer screening.

The FIT test is extremely sensitive to blood so positive results are common.

Although not impossible, cancer is highly unlikely, especially given your age. I note that you mentioned seeing blood mixed in with your stool. There are many other conditions that can cause bleeding inside your bowel such as inflammatory bowel disease and polyps.

There is unfortunately only one way to find out for sure and given your symptoms it's really good that you have a colonoscopy booked.

Best wishes for your procedure and I hope the above has put your mind to rest a little.

  • Hi, I know this was posted last year but I've just seen it as doing the one thing everyone tells you not to do and that's google!

I am in the exact same boat, 32 years old, transient abdo pain, bleeding and iron deficient. I done a qfit and it came back >400 so everyone is seeming pretty concerned. I have a colonoscopy booked for this coming Tuesday, which of course, will confirm. But when I seen this forum I thought I'd try and ease my mind a bit over the weekend.

So could I ask if you all don't mind what the outcome of your scope was and how raised your Qfit was?

    thanks so much,
