Mole Removal Results?

Hi All

After months of waiting I've finally had my suspect mole removed by excision biopsy at the weekend so now playing the waiting game again for results...!

All throughout the process I've been ok and not researched too much into the implications but since I've had it done I've come down with a bit of a bump! Partly because I'm still hobbling around (mole was found approx 1.5cm in length in between my toes) and in discomfort!

I believe the results take 2-3 weeks? Presume these are normally posted or am I likely to be called back in to a consultant to discuss them?

Any advice?

  • Hello lovely thankyou so much for taking the time to reply to me. That's made me feel a little better :) I have a lot of moles on my body. Will they take a look at them all do you think? There's a few that I'm worried could turn into cancer in the future. And of course I will keep everyone posted on here about my results x

  • Hi all,

I had a mole removed 3 weeks ago. They want me to go back on Saturday but I received the same letter as my original referral, no indication as to why.

when I called the hospital asking why I had been called back she said it was a follow up. I'm very worried, is it standard process to have results/follow up in person?

    Thank you, Vicky

  • Hi Vicky,

Yes it is normal practice to be called back to receive the results face to face, whether the results are positive or negative. If negative, they may still want to check the scar is healing & any other moles you may have. Sometimes biopsies are negative but they find cells that are pre-cancerous. These are dysplastic or atypical moles - moles that are benign but have the ability to turn cancerous in the future. In these cases they like to ensure that it's all been removed so you have no further recurrence in the future. Also, people with dysplastic moles tend to have a lot of moles (100+) so they like to check their other moles.

I hope this helps - Good luck on Saturday and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Hi Angie

    Thank you for your reply.

I spoke to the nurse this morning as my anxiety was through the roof! She informed me it was a pre-melanoma and I need to go back to make sure they took sufficient tissue and if I would just need to use a cream going forward.

I do have 100+ moles so they are going to check me whilst I am there.

    Thanks again for your support.

  • Hi Angie,

reading your posts have helped me. I had a mole removed and have been rung to come back for results. I had a balsa melanoma removed about three years ago and l am sure l got my results by phone and didn't have to go back.

so as l have had a call to go back in 10 days l am a bit concerned especially as l had the mole they removed for about 18 months ..why l didn't seek help earlier l have no idea, all the excuses in the world won't make up for how stupid il feel.

if it was bad news would they ask you to bring a friend or family member

    thanks

  • Hi Carol,

I'm afraid you can't really tell whether it's going to be bad or good news, especially as you can't take anyone with you due to the Covid restrictions.

Hopefully it won't be bad news but I suggest you write down any questions you want answering and take notes at your appointment. Or ask if you caǹ record the appointment on your phone - most consultants are fine with that and it helps to not miss out on what has been said.

Don't beat yourself up about the delay - we've all done it. Just focus on the fact that it's now been removed. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
