Mole Removal Results?

Hi All

After months of waiting I've finally had my suspect mole removed by excision biopsy at the weekend so now playing the waiting game again for results...!

All throughout the process I've been ok and not researched too much into the implications but since I've had it done I've come down with a bit of a bump! Partly because I'm still hobbling around (mole was found approx 1.5cm in length in between my toes) and in discomfort!

I believe the results take 2-3 weeks? Presume these are normally posted or am I likely to be called back in to a consultant to discuss them?

Any advice?

  • Hi,

I can't say I've heard of this type of sensation post melanoma surgery. I've had several mole excisions, including my melanoma removal and a groin/pelvic node dissection and I've never experienced this type of post op pain. It may be due to the location of the wound, especially as you will put pressure on it when you sit down.

If you can't get through to your hospital team & your GP is only taking emergency calls, can I suggest you contact the skin nurse at the Melanoma Focus charity. They may have experience of this if it's due to post surgery problems. They may tell you to contact your GP & then you can make an appointment, saying you have sought advice from a skin nurse who advises you see a GP. This should then get you an appointment. melanomafocus.com/.../

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

  • Hi Amanda,

Most patients are finding that their results appointments aren't being cancelled but are being done by telephone consultation. I would think you will get a letter or call in the next week or so explaining this.

Good luck & let us know how you get on,

    Angie

  • Hi Angie

Thank you very much for your helpful advice. I don't want to seem like I'm exaggerating anything or bother the melanoma clinic with something that could be nothing.

I think you are right that the location is the route problem as it's near the bend in my leg so when I sit it triggers the pain. Just wish there was an easy answer.

Thank you for your reply. It looks like you have helped a lot of people on here .

  • Hello everyone. New here.im scheduled my appointment for see specialist about my moles. 1 mole is 2 different colours and the other mole is quite big with 3 freckles inside it. Gp on face time says it dosent look like malonoma but I can't help but worry. What will I expect at hospital when I go in x

  • Hiya

I know how you are feeling and it's completely normal. I was really worried in the lead up to my appt and even called the hospital to see if I could get seen sooner so don't worry that your anxious. I was lucky that my GP was also a dermatologist and my mole was quite bad looking, I was referred for urgent excision and biopsy.

At your appointment you will be treated with complete ease and reassurance, the dermatology unit sees this day in and out and will look at your mole and assess whether it needs removal. A lot of the time they remove to be on safe side and send for biopsy which is standard procedure. They won't know for sure at your appt until a biopsy is done if it's Melanoma or not sure for.

I got my results a few weeks ago and funnily enough got my letter today. Mine unfortunately was malligent melanoma and I'm due for wider excision but it's delayed 12 weeks due to covid. I'm having a call with a skin cancer nurse in 2 weeks to talk about it all however I was lucky that it was caught early.

Hope you're okay and one piece of advice, don't Google. It made me really upset one night. Best to talk to others.

    Keep us updated.

  • Hi Kayleigh

You have already been given great advice from Fiberwick which I'm sure has helped calm your fears a little.

Just to help you further, 75% of patients that see a dermatologist are given a clean bill of health so the odds are good that your moles are fine. Some people that have a lot of moles (over 100) may suffer from a dysplastic (atypical) mole or two. These are moles that look dodgy but are in fact benign. However, they have the ability to turn cancerous in the future if left so dermatologists prefer to remove them & then keep an eye on all the other moles. My brother, niece & nephew have all had dysplastic moles removed & have regular check ups with the same dermatologist I am under.

You will be in good hands so please try not to worry & as advised, don't Google unless it's recommended sites ie. this CRUK site, Macmillan or the British Association of Dermatologists.

Take care, Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
