Referral to breast clinic

Hi all

I found a lump in my left breast on New Year's Day.  I saw a GP the next day and they did an immediate referral ( I'm lucky as my job provides me with private healthcare).  I have an appointment booked for Friday at a local hospital one stop breast clinic. How long do you think I would be there for? I think they said it will be a mammogram, ultrasound and possible biopsy.

As much as I am trying not to worry, I can't help it the nearer it gets. I'm more concerned for my children if it is breast cancer and how they will cope with that news. I'm 41 and I have 2 children, 21 and 17 and 2 grandchildren, 4 and 2.  I'm sitting at work with my mind wandering all day and wishing Friday would hurry up.

I'm sure it is nothing sinister but there is always that little doubt in the back of my mind, particularly as my friend who is only 36 was diagnosed last year.  I am usually so optimistic but I have a bad feeling about this.

I wish you all well xx

  • Hello Doo1978

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to hear that you've recently found this lump.

It's natural to be worried. I know that lots of our members here will agree that waiting for appointments, tests and results can be very difficult. It's natural to think about what may be ahead. Try and keep in mind that the majority of women who attend breast clinic aren't diagnosed with cancer.

Ahead of your appointment on Friday you might find it helpful to have a look at this article about what may happen during a breast clinic appointment. You'll likely be there for a few hours. I know that some people suggest writing down any questions you have before the appointment so that if your mind goes blank you can refer to your list. Some people find that having someone attend the appointment with them is also beneficial.

I hope all goes well tomorrow but do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • So I went to the clinic today, had mammogram and ultrasound- lump is thought to be hormonal. Have been advised to take evening primrose oil capsules and have to go back again in 6 weeks. Have been told I have nothing to worry about and am being tested for early menopause X

  • I am so pleased for you honey! Really happy that you got a good result. XX
