Dermatology Appointment.

Hi i first went to the docs early 2018 about a mole on the side of my head my girlfriend noticed its non raised not itchy and is like half brown half black:( ..Thats me just getting referred to dermatology now nearly 2 years later (Jan 2020).went back twice in 2019 but when the GPs looked they didnt seem concerned as it hadnt grown. Now another doctor says best to get it looked at and I am scared incase its been spreading all this time or something and its not treatable. I mean why did they not send me when i first went with it. Am I being silly?? Any help or advice would be great really freaking out here.

  • Hi JK,

Please try not to freak out. A GP has to consider the NICE guidelines when deciding if a referral is necessary. I have added the link and you will see that moles are scored points on what is wrong with them - in your case, the two colours only scores 2 points so they were, in essence, correct in not referring you. However, if a GP isn't happy or are unsure about the mole they can still refer & that is what the third GP has done, to be on the safe side. cks.nice.org.uk/skin-cancers-recognition-and-referral

In the two years that you've noticed the mole, if it is melanoma & has spread, you would know about it! You would have started having symptoms by now so please don't panic. I left my mole a year before seeing my GP - that was 23 years ago and, although it was melanoma, I'm still here fighting fit.

75% of patients referred to dermatology are given a clean bill of health so the odds are good that yours is fine. They may say it needs removing for biopsy just to make sure it's fine so don't panic. If it does come back as cancerous, treatment has improved and is showing great results so it's not as desperate as it once was.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie

  • Hi,

I had 2 moles removed 3 weeks ago one shoulder and the other mid back and awaiting the biopsy results which has been a difficult time. I was told by the original consultant in April 19 that he wasn't concerned with them and to come back in 6 months time. Fast forward to December I visited again and it was a different consultant, taking a look she said she wasn't happy with them and requested removal and biopsy.

I try to remain positive as my sister had a mole removed from her nose only 3 months ago and that came back fine. I guess it's luck of the draw and hopefully I get the all clear.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

  • In the same boat as you both. Awaiting initial appt on a suspected melanoma on my ear (2 week wait).

I hope you both have received good news?

  • I was at my dermatology app today and well he did a full body check first which was fine and then down to the real stuff good look through a wee magnefying glass thing with a light and then he put alcohol on it to have a look as the alcohol helps him.get a better look...Diagnosis is in to get it cut out next week then sent off for biposy but he cant say for sure whether its the Big C word for yet but its it is a few colours and irteugular which he didnt like the look of but he says if it is it should be very early stages and as its so flat should be less than 1mm deep which is a good sign but this is him having an educated guess wont know till he has a look next week. made me feel a tad better but wont feel great till got the full results and I know im 100% ok and it hasnt spread etc...also felt for swollen neck and other things everything perfect so fingers crossed just still overthinking. Hope you get good news and you let us know i will post again after my surgery next week.

  • Thanks for the update! It sounds like positive news for you! That's great!

I have my initial appointment on Monday. My blemish is also pigmented but is raised too, so we'll see. I hope my update sounds as positive as yours when I get it. Fingers firmly crossed.

Where abouts is your mole / lump? Are you having it removed under local anaesthetic? Did they talk about how they'd repair the area afterwards?

Sorry for all the questions. So anxious right now.

  • tottally understanble ask away always happy to help anywae I can. I have been a nervous wreck and still am till i get the all clear basically I have serious health anxiety and always think the worst :(...Yeah sounds positive yet i still think the what if its spread as I said first time i went with it was 2018 nearly 2 years later before its been seriously looked at. Yeah hell use the same tool as he used on me and he maybe take a sample from yours for biopsy am just lucky he had a free slot next week to get it removed. Beside my left ear on my temple half way up my head so il need my head shaved. BALDY haha. Think its just under local anaesthetic and then I would imagine stitched back up but he didnt really mention it. Hope you get good news to its such a horrible situation to be in. Keep me posted and I will keep in touch aswell Rachel. Any other questions dont be scared to ask.
