Asbestos

Hi

I am living in college owned student accommodation with my two year old son. I noticed a hole in the wall by our boiler when we moved in but thought nothing of it. I have recently come to realise that it may well be asbestos insulation board which has been damaged. It hasn't occurred whilst we've been here and I haven't touched it. I have asked college to get it tested. It's inside a boiler cupboard in the kitchen, but it is a sizable hole. I am really worried that every time I've opened the cupboard, I've been letting asbestos fibers into the air and into my small child's developing lungs as well as my own lungs. The switch for the hot water is inside the cupboard so it has been opened and closed a fair few times over the 18 months we've been here! I am so scared that my son is going to get seriously ill, and for myself as well. Does anyone have any advice for me? I'm seriously stressing out.

For a bit of context, my mother, grandmother and uncle have all died from cancer in the last 5 years and I am horrified at the thought of this happening to my son through something so stupid as negligent college staff.

  • If you are unsure were exposed to asbestos, or if your clothing has been contaminated I think it is advisable to contact your local council and speak to an asbestos officer who should be able to advise you further.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, short term exposure to asbestos will most likely have led to minimal exposure to fibres, and is very unlikely to have any long-term ill health effects. You can read more about this by clicking here

It's important to remember that most people have been exposed to low levels of asbestos, as it can be found in soil and air and yet few people become ill from it.

    Hope this helps,
