Looking for advice. HPV, no abnormal cells, colposcopy

Hello,

I had my first smear test in 2015. Everything came back fine.

I was called for my second smear in 2018 no abnormal cells where found but the HPV virus was present. A year later 2019 I went for another HPV was found again but they couldn't test my cells and went back 3 months later.

I've had my results still no abnormal cells, which is good but still have the HPV virus and I am being sent for a colposcopy.

I am just wondering if anyone has been through something similar? I'm not sure what they are looking for in the colposcopy as my cells seem to be OK according to my smear. Just worried about the unknown.

Thank you.

  • Hi Katie and welcome to the forum.

We do get a lot of posts about screening results so hopefully some of our members who have had a similar outcome will be along soon to share their advice and experiences with you.

We have some information about the colposcopy procedure just here if you'd like to find out more but do give our cancer nurses a call if you'd like to talk things through. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope this helps and that all goes well with your colposcopy when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

  • Hiya - just wondering how you got on?

Everything you have said has happened with me recently. My colposcopy is next week and I am so scared about the results..

  • Hi,

I know its easier said than done but try not to worry. Im the type of person that worries and over thinks but now I know whats going on I'm not too bad.

I had my colposcopy in February. The prodcedure was fine, very similar to a smear but more achy afterwards. During the procedure they used a solution to see if any abnormal cells were present. They found abnormal cells and took bisopies there and then. The biopsies where sent for testing and came back as pre cancerous CIN2. Within 4/6 weeks I had them removed via Lletz. Again the producer wasn't nice but not too bad. The worse part was having to go in alone due to the current pandemic. They managed to remove all the cells and took further biopsies to check the grade. They had changed to CIN3. I go back in September for a smear for a check up.

It is very daunting and I found it worse because I couldn't get clear answers but through talking to the nurses at the hospital it made things so much clearer.

I know its different for different people but I hope this helps. Hope all goes well next week

  • Aw thank you for your response!!

Fingers crossed everything comes back clear
