Very worried that I could have ovarian cancer

Hi everyone. I've been feeling very worried and was hoping for any advice anyone could offer, or even just a bit of understanding.

I went to my gp a few weeks before Christmas because of pelvic pain that had been going on for a week or so. Every single morning when I wake up I have a horrible burning pain in the same place on my right side. This eases once I'm up as moving around but comes back during the day, especially if I'm sitting down. It also spreads lower down and to my lower back too. This has been happening for around 4 or 5 weeks now.

My GP referred me to a gynaecologist who didn't do anything except say that it won't be cancer because I had a clear smear in February, which I thought was an odd thing to say because ovarian cancer wouldn't be detected with a smear. He referred me for an ultrasound scan.

I went back to my gp because I was so worried and he felt my tummy and said he couldn't feel anything but it sounded from where I was pointing to that it was something to do with my ovaries, maybe a cyst.

My appointment for my ultrasound is 23rd January which seems forever away. I'm getting really worried and I just wanted to know what is going on.

Ive also had breast pain and nausea, to the point where I thought I must be pregnant! But I'm definitely not.

I just feel very worried and the wait seems so long. I have had no other test or examinations except for the gp I saw recently feeling my tummy and doing a urine test (which was clear)

Edited to add that I'm 30 years old in case that is relevant.

Thanks so much in advance for any replies

  • Hi all,

firstly, glad that you have had the confidence to be a little bit more persistent at your doctors bumblebee, it is very difficult to not feel like you are wasting their time with what could be seen as minor ailments. I hope that she has given you a bit of reassurance before your scan.

elizabeth, I have never heard of cat scratch fever? It too sounds like you have been through the mill in the past too. Having high ca125 can be a worry, although I will say, a couple of my colleagues at work last year had ca125 in the 1000's and both their dermoid cysts were benign (very re-assuring that it's not always accurate predictor of ovarian cancer) I hope it reassures you a little before your scan, do keep me posted x

mcamymc, gosh what a journey (I hate that term!) you've had. I can't imagine how stressful things must be at the moment for you, especially having your clinic appointment cancelled.

dont try and do too much too soon. I'm on big boy antibiotics now and starting to feel a little brighter (although they are upsetting my tummy a bit)) hoping to be fit enough to go back to work next week

symptoms wise for me, like you, varied, so it's taken me a while to get referred; my period started going haywire about 2-3 years ago, I noticed a change in the discharge, sometimes bright red, with big clots, sometimes very dark (big clots) heavy but short, and the cycle, well no cycle at all, anything  from 14 days to two months in between.

My skin - I started to break out in spots all over my cheeks, doc thought rosacea for quite a while, the creams did nothing, so I got out on lymecyclene about 14mth back, and still take it now or it breaks out.

lower back ache - in particular at night, couldn't get comfy, had to change sides, lie on hot water bottles for relief, then sometimes in the morning, crippled with lower back pain.

waterworks - going to the loo through the day at least 25-30 times, going 5 or 6 times before settling in bed at night, up through the night etc.

constipation - increasingly worse, when it finally does work though, I have to go then, can't wait.

bloating - my tummy often feels like I felt when pregnant - when the top of uterus can be felt just under rib cage. I lost 3st on slimming world last year but only went down one size in trousers! Was getting infuriated when consultant was telling class 8lb off is a size down (kept saying no it blooming isn't!)

so they too were minor ailments, and I'd mention to doctors, but yet again felt like I was wasting their time. I was not going to same doctor each time, and it wasn't until I went to see one of the older lady doctors that she referred me. I go to her all the time now, for consistency.

i am back at consultant next Thursday to get results of omentum, peritoneum and fluid biopsies. I'm not too worried (I don't think, well maybe a little, bit haven't shared that with my husband) and have rang the other hospital yesterday to query when my surgery might be, and her secretary has said could be up to 8 months. I am absolutely gutted! I can't wait 8 months ‍♀️

  • I have my fingers crossed for you all!

Bumblingbee, I am delighted that you've gotten more reassurance and hope the antibiotics relieve your symptoms if it is a kidney infection- they're horrible!!

ElizabethCornishMaid, god that's been so much you've had to deal with. Totally understand all the little things that you can never pin point but when all put together tell a bigger picture. Fingers crossed it will be okay and not worst case scenario.

whoisjeanie, I'm sorry, 8 weeks is such a long wait, I can't even imagine. My cyst grew very quickly in the 3 weeks waiting for surgery so my advice would be if you notice it growing and you're feeling worse, let them know.

I had my fertility appointment today and they were very helpful and I explained my consultant app was cancelled so the other doctor went through all my results with me (thankfully all scans are normal!). My CA125 marker is still raised but coming down which is normal apparently.
Still waiting on the washings report but I have been told by my surgeon that all washing were negative!! Very relieved. Now for the monthly check ups for surveillance and fertility preservation.

It's actually terrifying how many people say the tumour markers we're not suggested or used in the process of gynae or tummy issues. And confusing smear tests as indicators of ovarian cancer. Interesting whoisjeanie, it was not until I had a female doctor that I was referred also. She took it all very seriously once she examined me and ordered the CA125.

Thinking of you all! Keep us posted x

  • Some really positive results for you today, mcamymc, so pleased for you. Long may it continue.

I've been feeling nauseous all over Christmas, however I put it down to the copious amounts of cheese and chocolate that have been out of bounds for months! (Still got mountains of cheese left)

i have to say, reaching out and having a chat to you guys has really helped my appointment anxiety. And thanks for the advice about quick growth of your cyst. I'm eager to find out what the craic is in that regard. I was kicked out of hospital about 10.30pm still intoxicated from gen anaesthetic and vaguely remember consultant coming in to say it was twice the size and there were adhesions to sort out. So my first question is has it doubled in size since May.

Must think about other questions to write down, I'm likely to go blank on the day, and just nod (like my dear mum used to, when I used to take her to hosp, then she would come out and say something random like, weren't her shoes nice lol)

take care everyone and pop back to let us know how you got on x

  • Excellent advice,it's good to here your on the mend too

    hi all

i like bumbling bee am ver worried about myself, just before new year I had a heavy post menapausal bleed, so I made an appointment to see my GP who saw me the following day and did a smear test etc a few days later.

his thoughts were that it might have been due to a polyp but he would send me for a scan anyway just to see what was going on.fortunately the bleeding Stopped after 5 days and I don't feel bloated or uncomfortable now.But during my scan today the radiographer asked if I was on any breast cancer medication it seemed a strange question to ask during an internal scan, especially as I had already told her about my medication, now I am afraid that she has spotted something and I have a week to wait at least before I know anything more.i am at my wits end.

i do have diabetis, polycystic ovary syndrome, high blood pressure.and my thyroid is not the best

apologies for posting this in several places

  • Hi MrsJBC01,

I just wanted to say that if they see something on the ultrasound your doctor should get in touch pretty urgently. I had my first ultrasound on a Friday and she rang me Tuesday evening saying to come in for urgent blood test (which was the CA125) and referred me to a oncology gynaecologist to rule out cancer. In most cases it isn't cancer but rest assured that they will take it very seriously until they know more.

Hoping that eases your worry a little x

  • Hi ladies

hope you're all well. Thought I'd let you know where I currently am.

Biopsies done so far are all ok cannot confirm anything with ovary until it’s removed though
She’s going to operate ASAP because it’s grown rapidly since last May, 20-22 cm (I saw photos... fascinating!)
She’s getting me into bigger hospital for consultation and pre-op within two weeks and next surgery will be within the following four weeks x

Ca125 blood tests repeated, so waiting on those results now, but things are moving on quickly.

how has everyone else got on? X

  • Hi i was wondering if anyone can let ne know if 78 ca125 is cancer. Im really scared. I am 61 and been bleeding. I have my usual period sore boob naggy symptoms before the bleed. Its light but the blood results csme back today. Waiting to go to a scan. I only have bleeding no other symptoms. Been feeling sick and shaky all day. Would appreciate anyone knowing if this number is high and sinister.

  • Hi Caggie,

Sorry to hear you've not been well and are worrying. The worry and waiting is often the worst bit.
I just want to say to you that the tumour markers cannot actually tell if someone has cancer so even having a raised marker may not mean it is cancer. As hard as it is it is best to wait until they have as gathered as much bloods, scans etc and go from there.
Only biopsies can really give a yes or no to cancer, the rest is estimating likelihood based on results, age, symptoms etc.

I hope you get some answers soon xx

  • Glad to hear they're speeding up the process and getting that thing out of you!
No unnecessary strenuous activity- don't risk rupture!

I had my fertility appointment and on waiting list now to follow up. Have my consultant on 27th and hopefully surveillance from there.

Thinking of you all and hoping it's all benign results you get! X

  • Hello. Thank you for replying. I am still shaking from my appointment this morning. The gp said the lab bloods are showing the 78 and to go on a ovarian cancer trail. I asked if 78 means sinister things and said yes and no. Threw me totally cos the nurse when taking the blood said if there was anything thd hospital lab will ring sometime tonight. I didnt get a call so i thought all was well just hormonal. I also feel i need to push something out of my vagina. No other of the symptoms just bleeding.
