Breast swelling

I'm 36 years old and this week I have noticed a considerable increase in my left breast. It also hurts if its knocked or if I lie face down..... tonight I think my armpit is a bit swollen too.

I went to the gp yesterday who felt a few things, so referred and I'm to see a consultant monday night etc.....

Anyone any experience of this? Obviously I'm concerned but dont want to think the worst as I've 3 kids. However I'm practical and would prefer to know what I may face.

Thank you xxx:)

  • Hi, I have recently went to go with swelling on breast, rash on nipple and swollen gland on my neck. But as I have no lump I have to wait over 6 months for a scan, apparently breast screening unit are only seeing patients within lumps within two weeks everyone else is routine.

Did the gp find swollen glands under your arms?

    Good luck with appointment...

  • Thank you for your reply!! I dont actually recall her feeling under my armpit etc........ it's me that's noticed it!! She noticed a few areas of concern in the breast whatever that means.

I've woke up this morning and have like a stabbing feeling under my armpit and my breast! I've been told I'll see a consultant monday and get whatever tests I need.

I'm trying not to think about it but I'm very anxious I mean who wants to be facing a cancer diagnosis??

Just because you have no lump shouldn't just leave you for months........so unfair  I'm sorry you hsve to wait so long xxx

  • I can so sympathise with everyone.

I went yesterday with pain in left breast like bruising. I didnt think I had lump but doctor said he thought he could feel something and definitely more fuller the the other so I've been referred on a 2 week wait as he doesn't want to mess around.

I'm so worried and  cant help thinking about it. Didnt sleep a wink last night. Xxx

  • I know how u feel awful hey xxx yes my breast is so much fuller, like being pregnant again lol.....

It's so stressful thinking do I or do I not have breast cancer???? I mean it's crazy never thought I'd be in this position . Glad your doctor being pro active  x

  • Hello Crystal and thanks for your post

I’m afraid we are not able to tell anyone what is the matter (diagnose), so I am afraid I cannot say what could be causing your breast symptoms I think your GP has referred you to see a specialist just to be on the safe side.

When you see the specialist later on today they will examine you. Depending on the assessment they may arrange for you to have an ultrasound and possibly a mammogram. A needle biopsy is usually suggested if the scan shows changes in the breast that the doctors are not sure about. This does not mean that anything is particularly wrong but the biopsy will usually confirm what it is.

Waiting when you are worried is very stressful but most people who are referred to see a specialist are found not to have breast cancer.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. If you would like to talk this through with one of the nurses directly, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040.  We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
