2ne opinion on biopsy

Hi there.

I had a mole/ freckle removed in November  I didn't here anything else so I rang for results.

My consultant said the biopsy was having to be sent to another hospital for a 2nd opinion.

Do you think this means cancer

  • Hi Lindsey,

In answer to your question - no, not nessarily. It means that either the tissue (mole) they removed for biopsy is either very small & it's hard to see any dodgy cells or that the tissue sample is an adequate size but the cells aren't obviously dodgy but neither are they obviously normal.

This is not uncommon, especially in melanoma biopsies. I know of several people who have had their sample checked by two or even three different hospital histology departments before they could agree one way or the other. It may be that your hospital histology department aren't as expert if a sample isn't 'obvious' so they will send it to one that is expert. Your odds haven't changed, it's just going to take longer to receive a definitive result.

Good luck, I hope it comes back quickly & is fine. Please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)
