CT scan wait

I had a chest X-ray on the 8th December was called by GP on the 9th to say nodules had been detected and needed a CT scan. I am still waiting for an appointment for CT so considering having it done privately but wonder what happens if I need treatment. I cannot afford private treatment but the waiting to get appointment on NHS for scanis not good. Anyone have advice. I can't get appointment to see GP to discuss until 20th January.

  • You can have a scan privately and then go on the NHS should you require treatment.  But usually the scans come through quite quickly and I would give it another week, then ring the hospital to see where you are on the list.  Good luck, Carol

  • Thanks Carol. I will do as you advise.

  • That's nonsense. According to the Citizen's Advice Website "A GP must provide any treatment which is immediately necessary in an emergency, even if you are not registered with them." www.citizensadvice.org.uk/.../

Your GP may not have any routine appointments before that date but they are paid to provide emergency appointment and yours is an emergency. Ring them first thing in the morning and politely insist that you be seen as an emergency appointment because this is a cancer case and needs to be fast tracked. Ask for the duty GP to call you back if the receptionist says there are no appointments available, emphasise that you have cancer not a stubbed toe or something unimportant. If they still refuse, tell them that you will be complaining to the local CCG and then do so. You can find the ccg contact details at www.england.nhs.uk/.../

You could also ring 111 and explain the situation to them - they may be able to refer you to an NHS walk in centre to see a different GP.

    Good luck

    Dave

PS even going for a private scan may still need a GP referral.

  • Hello davek.

Thanks for reply. Managed to get a phone consultation with GP for 8th but got appointment for CT same day. Although date for scan is 21st. Was informed the Xmas and New Year holidays had an impact on appointments.  Will update when I have more news.

  • Just an update. Still awaiting a diagnosis after CT scan. Out of the blue on 31st I received a phone call from hospital to say there had been an appointment made for me to see a Respiratory Consultant on the 5th. I said i hadn't had any resulrs and they just said the consultant will discuss this on the 5th.  I presume it will not be good news.

  • Hi. I am sure you are anxious about your appointment? I had a CT in 2013 that found 2 nodules. 5mm and 4mm. They were rescanned to check for growth at 3 months, 1 year and 2 years. It was an awful time and I didn't believe GPs who said they were likely nothing serious. They never grew and were diagnosed and intrapulmonary lymph nodes. I never knew there WAS such a thing but that's apparently what mine are. They were on each lung in lower lobes

    Best wishes

    Andrea

  • Thanks Andrea.

I think the worry is the unknown. Hopefully all this will be resolved on Wednesday. Unfortunately my GP is part time so not available to discuss with her. I will post again with news.

  • Please do let us know Eileen. When I got my results they were sent in a letter although this is going back to 2013 and protocol has no doubt changed. The letter saying they found 2 nodules floored me and, as I was at home, I had no medical person to discuss it with. I was distraught as I didn't know what it meant.

If they scanned everyone a ridiculous number would have at least one nodule in lungs. As they don't routinely scan everyone most people have no idea they have them. I had a cough and my GP said I didn't need tests but I paid for a private CT which found the nodules and resulted in 2 years of awful anxiety as well as a colonoscopy. And they never grew and were assumed benign.

At least if you have questions on Weds you are with a consultant who will be able to answer you or offer explanations.

Can I ask where in lungs nodules are? Mine were lower lobes
