HPV positive result not sexually active for years

Hi,

im hoping anyone can help me with understanding my smear test results. I hadn't had a smear test for 8 years since my last child was born. I had one on October and have just received the results that I have no abnormal cells but am high risk hpv positive. I haven't been sexually active for approximately 7 years. Everything I've read had said that the virus should clear itself in 1-2 years and if it doesn't this is when it causes problems, so it says I'll be invited back in a year to see if it has cleared but I'm sure if it hasn't in at least 8 years it's unlikely to now. I'm so worried that it's been doing damage in all this time and I have to wait another year before it's looked at again. Is there any alternative I can seek for it to be looked at sooner? Im just so worried that I have this thing that hasn't gone in many many years and that it will cause serious damage potentially between now and my next smear. I'd be very grateful for any advice. Many thanks.

  • I'm glad it may be nothing to worry about but you don't want to take chances with you health.

I've had 2 operations, 5 months of chemo and just awaiting another scan and will probably have to have further treatment as not feeling too good.

  • Hi all I've always been for my smear tests

never before tested positive for hpv or had abnormal results

now I've had both I've had a colposcopy done today & biopsies taken

I'm so worried I've got cancer and y hasn't this hpv been mentioned in any previous smears I had my last one in 2018

  • I believe its because they have only just started tezting for this..so u may have had it ages without knowing. I hope all will be ok .

  •  I got hpv in 1982 although they couldn't test for it then I was told about 18 years ago that was when I got it. I was married at the time and I never cheated. I have now had a re call smear test and have to go for a Colopscopy test. Although there are no abnormal  cells detected I am still worried I am 62.

  • I had my 3rd smear in September, no abnormal cells but hpv positive again, I have been called for a colposcopy on 28th October, beside myself with worry at the moment, keep telling myself it's better to be looked at but that's not helping much

  • Hi I've had cervical cancer 10 years ago and thought I should share my experiences. 10 years prior to my cancer I had a colposcopy to treat cell changes and then a smear test every year after as tested positive for HPV. All smear tests were clear for 10 years until my last one when a couple of polyps were seen. On investigation it was discovered I had a tumour. By this time I was spotting ( small amounts of blood typically seen at the beginning of your period). I thought this was to do with approaching menapause but it was the tumour. I was 51 and had one sexual partner to whom I was and am married. I had a radical hysterectomy in which the uterus, cervix, part of the Virginia and surrounding tissue are removed. I went through immediate rapid menapause. I was lucky because the cancer had not spread so no chemo was necessary. My consultant said smear tests are notoriously unreliable but the people who die from cervical cancer tend to be those who never have smear tests at all. So if you are in the system you might develop cancer but it will be caught early.  I can only tell you my experience. Make sure you have smear tests every year for the rest of your life even if you have to pay. Any virginal bleeding go straight to your GP. If you have to have a hysterectomy at some point in the future as many women do, make sure they remove your cervix. I wish you all well.

  • Hi Karen,

I read you mentioned taking AHCC supplements, just wanted to know if they were useful and if you had your next smear after taking the capsules was Hpv clear or not.

    Regards,

  • Hi Zoe,

No, unfortunately they haven't helped but it was worth a try.  My 3rd smear came back the same, HPV positive but no abnormal cells.  I went for a colopscopy last week and everything looked ok although she said she could 'see' the HPV virus on my vagina, whatever that means !! But she was happy that she couldn't see any problems and wants me to have another in 12 months to make sure there are still no changes.  She did confirm that the HPV may never cause an issue but better to keep a check so that if anything does change it can be sorted.  Wish I had been given the all clear but I suppose its better to keep an eye on things

    Kind regards

    Karen

  • Just found this discussion .. I've learnt so much and in sane boat and petrified .. result was today I'm shocked I'm 55 and as others of you say 12 months !!! I've gone into meltdown I'm a stressed worried person as it is , when one sees the C word ! 12 months ?? Surely this is an issue with our health system to suddenly start testing for so something but leaving you in limbo as the  next stage ie: cure/treatment/advice that allows you to sleep at night then why do such a test yet .. I'm actually angry as I'm left to cope alone and feel panicked ‍♀️
