Tongue Biopsy

Hi,

I had 2 large biopsy's done in July for White patches on the Left Lateral part of my tongue, they came back as Lichenoid inflammation. Phew... but I asked to be referred to a new oral medicine team at another hospital and they felt that because the White was covering the entire left side of my tongue and I had developed a couple of ulcers that I should have the whole lot removed. 4 days later on this Christmas Eve I had surgery to remove the left side of my tongue, but because it was such a large area they left the wound open. I cannot tell you how painful it has been, I'm 5 days post surgery and just as the pain was becoming manageable I have developed a new problem that I don't know how to deal with. As the tongue heals it can be quite lumpy and I have a lump near the front of the wound that keeps catching on my teeth and bleeding. I've been using mouthwashes as given and instructed by my surgeon but until the swelling/lump goes down I don't know what I can do. It's in a position that even when I swallow it catches it and it bleeds. My fear is it will never heal if it keeps being cut.
I'm husband thinks I should give myself time to heal before I start panicking and they said a 4-6 week recovery with pain easing after 2 weeks.
I will get Hubbie to call the surgeon as I still can't talk properly but has anybody had the same problem? It's making it so so sore...any advise would be helpful. I get my results in 2 weeks so anxious over that as well.

  • Hello Sarah.

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with things following on from your recent biopsy. I know from posts here on the forum that it can be painful and not always an easy recovery.

I'm going to suggest that you post on this thread here. It's a very long thread and although it is primarily about throat cancer I know lots of the members who have posted there have had tongue biopsies too. I'm sure if you read through you'll find some helpful information.

There are also links in the thread to 2 blogs by RadioactiveRaz and Anchor1707. Again, you may find some helpful information on those links.

If you're struggling do get in touch with the hospital who may be able to help with advice or medication to manage things.

    I hope things improve soon.

    Best wishes,
