Need answers

Good afternoon!! Thank you for accepting my request to join the group. A bit of back ground information about my health issue.

Around 18 months ago, I started noticing a stabbing pain under my left armpit area. it was on and off. and at times could be quite painful. I obviously has a good feel and found that one of the axillary lymph nodes was (and still is) hard, immovable and slightly swollen. Other symptoms I noticed were tiredness, painful joints (particularly my shoulders and neck) night sweats (randomly, not every night, and have only needed to get up in the middle of the night to change my bed sheets once or twice, other than that, just regular sweaty) I also have the added loveliness od GERD symptoms - I take omeprazole for this, but still, daily have the feeling of food being stuck in my throat, right by the collarbone.

I went to my GP who referred me to the rapid access breast clinic due to the family history of breast cancer. Both my mum and aunty were diagnosed with breast cancer at age 44. I was also eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Given sertraline and painkillers and sent on my way.

On January 2nd '19 I went for my appointment at the breast clinic. I was given an ultrasound, and was told that I have 2 cysts in the breast where the pain and swollen lymph node was. nothing about the lymph node was mentioned.

Fast forward a few weeks ago, with the lymph node pain gradually worsening, I decided to go back to the dr. All of the symptoms mentioned above still ongoing, and gradually worsening.

The lymph node is still swollen. Its between 2.5 and 3 CM in size. hurts if i mess with it too much, and i will still have some random stabbing pain - to the point where it catches my breath and i have to stop what i'm doing because it hurts that much. Think of someone driving a knitting needle into you and you get the gist.

I have an appointment again next week, 2nd of Jan with the same breast clinic. the GP - locum - looked quite concerned when I went back to queery the LN swelling and immediately said that I should be sent back to the breast clinic for further evaluation and possibly have the lymph node removed and tested.

I've obviously spent a considerable amount on google, trying to work out why the lymph node would be like this for so long and have come to the conclusion that its NHL.

someone please tell me i'm being a hypochondriac!!

    Hi Floundering,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and the length of time that you've been having them. I agree with your locum - you need to be referred back to the breast clinic for further tests.

Both of my parents had cancer, as did many of my relatives and close friends and I myself have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years. I know how nervous I felt at first and, have a fair idea of just how worried you must be feeling now.

Many people turn to google at this stage and, this is not a good idea, as it puts all sorts of unsavoury thoughts in your head. Try to stick to reputable cancer sites, if you must look things up.

Try to stop feeling your breast, as you will only succeed in making it sorer.

I'm glad to hear that you don't have too long to wait until 2nd January and, hope that it is good news for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I've been reading research articles and case studies on JSON etc. I did a nursing degree when I was 21. Have since re trained and now have a 2nd degree in design. So my past knowledge from being a health care professional is probably making things worse.

I just don't understand how a lymph gland can be swollen, sore, hard  and immovable for any other reason other than what I'm dreading. Also the stabbing pain.

Fingers crossed I get a firm answer July this time next week.

I'm off to drown my sorrows in sauvingon blanc!!

    Much love xx

    Hi Floundering,

I hope that you are enjoying that Sauvignon Blanc. I have a background in one of the professions allied to medicine, so know only too well how a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I am glad to hear that you are soon to have another appointment with the breast clinic.

You will probably already know that breast pain seldom accompanies a cancer diagnosis. Although cysts are not cancerous, they sometimes have to be removed. If there was any infection present this could trigger a reaction in your lymph nodes. I sincerely hope that there is a simpler explanation than you are expecting.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on on 2nd January. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Update:

Went for the appointment and had an ultrasound done in the offending lymph node. Radiologist said it looked abnormal so did a core biopsy. So just waiting for results now which should hopefully be this week some time.

    Thanks xxx

    Hi Floundering,

Many thanks for your update, although I'm sorry to hear that the radiologist thought that it looked abnormal on the ultrasound. It is always worrying while you are waiting for test results. I had a similar scary wait when my surgeon told me at my frst visit that he was pretty sure that I had cancer. I had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy that day and, went back a week later to have my cancer confirmed.

I had a lumpectomy, but a year later had another cancer in the same breast and had a double mastectomy. I hope that you are wrong about NHL. Google puts all sorts of thoughts in your head. Fortunately, they are seldom right.

Please let us know what your results are when you get them through.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
