Recurring cervical polyp

Hi

i had a cervical polyp removed last year (which was benign) now I have another one... my gynaecologist said it doesn't look nasty but he is removing it on 24th January. I am more worried this time as I have been reading dr google (I know I shouldn't) and it says they shouldn't return. Now I'm terrified that it's not actually a polyp but a tumour! Hoping to come across someone else that has had a recurring cervical polyp.

  • Hi Natalie

I can definitely provide you with some reassurance.

My cervical polyp has recurred...in fact it has recurred several times in the 20 years I have had it.

Sorry if this is TMI...but a GP (minor surgery) removed it years ago. She told me that there was a chance it could come back which it did. Exactly the same place. Same type of growth. Once it got very long and the GP tried to take it off again and I freaked (no feeling in the polyp but it was the thought of what was going on that made me think...whoa...that's enough of that!)...so half of it was left on. It grew back full size.

These past few years, the polyp breaks off by itself and often bleeds (sorry TMI again - after sex or tampon use, this can be a trauma for it, causing it to break off or rupture).

Every time if breaks off or ruptures....it always grows back. Sometimes I have a feel and the polyp has gone (likely just broken off)...only for it to come back.

The polyp is completely benign (over 20 years it has been seen by tens and tens of GPs/nurses...even the guy who just inserted my coil commented "oh there's a polyp...I think it's broken off at the end there" and all my smears have been normal. The last time I saw my GP she was like...right...we can leave things as they are without issue...but why don't I perform a surgery right now and twist it off. I told her I might just pass out at the thought of that and so she promptly sent me on my way!

    I hope this helps xx

Funny you have read the polyp should not come back...I was told there was every possibility that it WOULD come back!

  • Thank you so much for this!!! Wow you've really been through the ringer with these haven't you!! Is there anything they can do to stop it recurring? I read they can be caused by too much estrogeon, is there something to take to reduce the amount of estrogeon we produce xx

  • Hello! Yeah! Haha! Funnily enough I had a quick check of it last night. It is now broken off but....I can feel the base already repairing itself and so i'm expecting it back in a few weeks.

I have had this for 20 years now!

I'm really not sure if they can do anything to permanently stop them from coming back. Hmm. Perhaps if they had removed a bigger chunk of the cervix with the polyp when they first removed it and sent it off, I might not be in this position now! Seriously...I would not worry. Especially as we have the same thing and nothing has happened to me in the 20 years I have had it and all smears have been normal (I have attended every invite).

Recurring polyps are definitely a thing (your gynaecologist has already said it doesn't look nasty....he/she would tell you otherwise and would no doubt have got you in for a much earlier appointment if there was any doubt). They just like to remove them ad they can be troublesome (i.e as in my case, breaking off, bleeding and rupturing!)

  • Hi

thanks for the reply sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. Wow I can't believe you have been having them for that long. I read extra estrogeon can cause them... is there tests doctors can do to test for that? If so is there some kind of progesterone pill to take to even it out? Xx
