Bloody discharge between periods

Hi everyone.

I am absolutly sick with worry and have really bad health anxiety.

Last month I had a normal period that lasted 8 days, four days later I started to get some bloody/pink discharge and this went on for about 5 days. Then for 2 weeks everything was normal and I had my next period. Then again four days later the smae thing happened however this epidose of bloody/pink discharge has gone on for longer with it being day 9 currently.

I went to my doctor as I was so scared about it and she asked me some questions and said nothing I said sounded worrying. She done an examination of my cervix using a speculum same as a smear and said my cervix looked healthy apart from a bit of cervical ectropian. I know what this is and wasnt bothered with hearing I have it however she is also sending me for an ultrasound which has caused me to feel sick to my stomach with fear. She said she doesn't expect anything to come back from the ultrasound and that the next step would be to put me on some pills to reregulate my periods.

I am so worried that I might have cervical cancer or uterine cancer. I just want to cry all day long but I have 3 children so I can't i have to keep it all in. I did have a smear test in Aug 2018 which was clear but I don't know if this matters. Im just very scared atm.

  • The waiting is so intense, my anxiety been up&down like a yo yo, but I'm focusing on my beautiful children and pushing the negative thoughts away otherwise I will make myself so Ill, it's so hard and I know where your coming from, the longer I've had to wait for results it actual feels easier as some mornings I wake up and actually forget fir a moment that I'm waiting for results

  • Hi there xx

well...I can only speak from personal experience but...having exactly the same symptoms as you, my doctor requested lots of different swabs as they said such discharge could be caused by infection. In my case...it was so I am surprised they haven't taken swabs from you.......xx

When the infection had been treated, there weren't any other incidents of this unusual spotting.

I was wondering if you could ask your GP if they would consider doing doing the swabs? xx

  • Not being doing good at all. I've been in bed for days not eating or socialising with anyone. I am so so scared of the ultrasound tomorrow I just know something bad will be shown.

I don't think I will cope if the outcome is bad I think i will lose my mind completely.

I wish I a normal thinking person I don't know why I was given the brain I have it's useless.

  • I suffer with anxiety too so when faced with a real drama, I find it hard to cope, I've had ultrasound, hysteroscopy, biopsy already, its 4 weeks today since biopsy and still waiting for results, the hospital did say 2 to 3 weeks for results but due to christmas they said could be longer,

I was told during ultrasound that "something" was there and measured 15mm, so hopefully, although you wont get definite answers, you should know at ultrasound some answers?

  • Hi Anxiety Girl

hang in there xx 1000s and 1000s of women have the same symptoms as you (which I also did) and it wasn't anything sinister causing it. You say you know the scan will show something bad, but you don't know that. The scan could be clear.
If the scan flags up that there is something that needs some attention, you will cope too. Remember your GP has only requested this as a precaution, for example - to rule our polyps which may be causing your symptoms (I have one of those on cervix and inside the womb).
You only had a smear just over a year ago which was clear.
What time is the scan tomorrow? Did they tell you to do anything to prepare (I.E to drink a fair bit of water before your appointment and not to empty your bladder...make sure you have regard for any prep so they can just get on the with scan without issue or delay). I can recall being instructed to drink a lot before the scan and not to empty my bladder, not sure if that applies to you xxx

You've not got long to wait now. Your brain isn't useless. Just different xxx all our brains are!

  • Hi [@Mummy2four]‍ sorry to hear you are going through all these tests and I hope you get your results soon and they are all good.

I was hoping for an answer or some kind of idea at the ultrasound but was told they are not allowed to say anything as the scans have to be looked at and then a report sent on to my gp who will then contact me. So I have to wait for that.

My gp said as soon as she gets it she will call me. But I'm absolutly terrified.

  • Hi [@citygirl111]‍ thank you for your reply.

I went and had the scan it was fine I knew what to expect as I've had a similar scan when pregnant with my son as I had placenta previa. I did have to drink 2 pints of water which wasn't fun having to hold all that water in for such a long time.

The scan itself was over quite quick I thought it would take alot longer I don't know if that is a good thing or not. I was told to expect results within 4-5 working days. My gp did say she would ring me when she gets them so its just the waiting game now.

My partner came with me to the scan and was watching the monitor the whole time. He said they looked at my cervix, ovaries and uterus. I asked him if it all looked normal like he would know lol!! He said to him it did but how would he know lol.

I've woken up this morning quite low and depressed. It's a new year and I can't look forward to it I feel like everything is on hold because of these results. Also the continuous bleeding is doing my head in. I don't want to bleed for this long it doesn't feel nice. I haven't even been able to be intimate with my partner in forever it's just so unfair.

  • An update

My doctor called me this afternoon with good news that my ultrasound was clear and that everything looked normal and healthy. The relief!

My doctor wants me to keep a diary of my bleeding as she wants to see the pattern and then decide whether I go for having my cervical ectropian cauterised or if I take something for hormonal imbalance.

She told me to stop worrying so much and that it's nothing dangerous or scary like cancer so I'm feeling relieved.

  • Great news! Really happy for ya.

AnxietyGirl - do me a fave and ask the GP to take swabs for infection. Will you ask them to do that? I had the exact same symptoms as you and it was down to infection you see.

Take care and well done for getting through this :-) xx

  • Hi Citygirl11,

Can you tell me more about your symptoms of thrush with pink/brown spotting?
