Worried husband

Sorry, i am not sure if i can ask this question here. Its a bit of a long story. And i have to say i am a worrier about health, especially cancer (the worry is ruining my otherwiseaamazing life) and it clouds my logic.

My wife discoverd a dark mark under toenail in aug, looked like a bruse. As she had a family history off melanoma she spoke to doc who checked it and said it was nothing to worry about, likley a bang she hadnt noticed. Then a few days later she got referred to a dermatologist, the dermo checked and said it was probably nothing but asked her back. At the next apt she said she wanted to send her for biopsy as she couldn't see under the nail. A week later the top layer of nail fell off, there appered to be dried blood underneath, over time it washed off. By the time she went to get biopsy about half the nail had regrown and was clean, with just the end of the nail still looking damaged. I wasn't worried but when she seen surgeon he was quite rude and wouldn't answer any questions. He took the whole nail and some nail bed off. He wouldn't say anything only she has to come back in 6 weeks and wouldn't give her results over the phone. I will now be worried sick over xmas. Why would it take so long for results. If it is something serious wouldn't she need to know sooner??

  • Hello, I'm leeanne. You replied to my post about my armpit lump.

When I saw my doctor about my lump. She told me bad things don't disappear. So the fact that your wife's nail regrew is fab and things looking better on there own is good.

My dad was diagnosed with melanoma in his face. It started as what looked like a wart.... Under his eye. It got bigger and bigger... But not huge.... To the size of a normal wart. The grow was slow and gradual. We were told it was an insect sting to begin with. Most likely an infected wasp sting. As months past it started to create a dip in the middle....... Like a Yorkshire pudding and it started to oooz. Eventually a biopsy was done and it was around 5 weeks for result. Unfortunately he had melonoma and it had now eaten at his eye and they were unable to save it. He had surgery were they removed not only the eye but the socket and surrounding bone. He then had metal plates put in along with magnetics to hold a future prosthetic. 10 years on he's laughing and smiling. Living his best life and calls himself pappa pirate.

My 5 year old last Christmas wouldn't eat his vegetables..... My dad said.... You know why pappa pirate is a pirate..... My son said no. He said because I didn't eat all my vegetables. My son laughed and said my eye won't fall out because I don't eat vegetables. And pappa pirate said it will...... He said watch...... He pretend to sneeze and hit the back of his head at the same time and the prosthetic eye came out. My son nearly chocked with the amount on vegetables he threw in his mouth lol it's took a lot of strength and determination to get were he is. But he's hear!

It was a long hard journey for us all. But it's not the end.

Along these 10 years he's found about 5 new lumps and they have all been removed and biopsyed and the 5/6 week wait starts all over again. And each and every time noone gave us a straight answer. They can't. They don't know the out come. And every time we go for results it's always in person. So please don't think that all of the wait and no solid awnsers means bad news! It doesn't.

And if it is not so good news. Itl be hard yes..... But it's not impossible. And the doctors and cancer staff are amazing.

My dad prosthetic eye is absolutely amazing. He gets a new one made each year because your skin color changes. And yes you can see its a prosthetic. But only because its big enough to cover his full socket. But the eye and the detail is unbelievable.

    Think positively!

If you need to chat. I'm a fab listener

I wish you and your wife the best outcome. ️

I hope this also awnsers your question on your other post.

  • Hi,

I'm sorry that your wife is waiting for these results & that you are both very worried, especially with a history of melanoma in her family.

The reason it will take about 6 weeks for the results is because of the workload that is increasing in the histology, dermatology & plastic surgery departments. Also, Christmas & New Year means that the normal waiting period is a little longer. The majority of consultants do not give results by phone or letter - face to face is the norm as they also like to check the wound & any other areas of the body (moles etc) that they think need checking, even if it's a clear biopsy.  Most surgeons won't give any indication about the tissue removed, mainly because they don't always get it right when looking with the naked eye (my consultant surgeon is brilliant but even he got it wrong when he removed what he thought was a basal cell carcinoma - it turned out to be a dermatafibroma caused by an insect bite)!

Although 6 weeks has been advised, your wife may get an appointment to go back a little sooner if the results are received earlier - it doesn't necessarily mean bad news, it's just how histology prioritise their work sometimes. Try and put it to the back of your minds at the moment - 75% of patients referred to dermatology get a clean bill of health. Of the 25% diagnosed with melanoma, only 5% are subungal melanoma so your wife's odds are on her side. Also, if your wife's relative had the more common type of melanoma - cutaneous melanoma (a mole) - the chance of a subungal diagnosis is no higher than if there was no melanoma history in the family. This is because most cutaneous melanoma is due to UV damage (with a small amount due to genetics) whilst subungal is mainly due to trauma or injury. and it's more prevalent in people over 50 and those of darker skin.

I hope your wife's results come back quickly & they bring good news. Please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
