Don't be frightened of upper endoscopy

Please don't let horror stories from others put you off having an upper endoscopy. I had this procedure a few days ago with sedation, as I was very anxious about both the procedure and the possibility of worrying findings. I had the local anaesthetic throat spray, then 4mg of midazolam IV, which felt like about a half-bottle of wine but no more. I was relaxed but in no way 'out of it'. I was expecting to be asked to swallow the scope when it was introduced into my gullet, but before I was aware it had been inserted my endoscopist was already saying she was at the base of my stomach and telling me what she saw. The procedure was all over and done with in between 3 and 5 mins, including painless biopsies taken from 4 sites. At no point did I have any feeling of suffocation or even any gagging. Like I say, I felt the narrow 'snake' of a scope in my mouth but did not feel it going past my palate and into my gullet and stomach.

If anyone is also frightened of gastroscopy for fear of the results,  you are better off knowing the cause of your symptoms, and you might, like me, receive reassuring results! My endoscopy was urgent because of my symptoms of 'dysphagia', with food (especially bread and meat) sticking in my gullet and sometimes being regurgitated. I convinced myself I would have the stomach cancer which took my aunt. However, my endoscopist told me that I only have mild scarring at the junction of my gullet and stomach from a hiatus hernia, and some mild gastritis which could be H. pylori. I don't even have Barrett's Oesophagus, so am good to go with acid-reducing medications!

I am so happy now that I didn't let internet horror stories put me off taking what turned out to be a quick and barely uncomfortable procedure. Be brave and get it done- you'll be glad you did, whatever the outcome!

  • Hi Flower 5757,

I went for the endoscopy this morning, it didn't go well

I couldn't swallow the tube at all and this was with throat spray and sedation which didn't have any effect on me at all so they had to leave it and they are going to find a alternative procedure because the endoscopy is a really uncomfortable procedure and a doctor told me that a lot of patients struggle with the procedure. So I have more waiting now to see what happens next.

  • Oh no you were unlucky, how awful. My sedation knocked me out, I didnt remember a thing. I wonder if they waited long enough for the sedation to work. You poor thing, strange how the sedation doesant work on some people. Hopefully they can find an alternative investigation for you. Keep me updated, try not to worry it's not your fault xx

  • Hi flower 5757,

thank you for your reply I will keep you updated, yesterday I read my report from the hospital and it said that I was unable to have fentanyl because I am allergic to the ingredients in it and this is why the sedation didn't work it wasn't strong enough.  I think the alternative is a barium swallow or maybe they will diagnose me for celiac with the four tubes of blood they took from me yesterday

  • Did they only find out you were allergic to Fentyl yesterday, goodness. Yes I'm sure they will be able to find out diagnosis from other tests. Tbh my endoscope didnt really show much anyway, it did show no cancer in the parts they looked at, but that was all. Good luck xx

  • Hi guys I thought I should reply I'm here to those who are anxious about endoscopy.. Hand on heart this with my biggest fear to face as I got reflux for the last six years, I was really paranoid what was causing it..  6 years, of Burning throat, Almost being sick on the acid). Ppl not working/ so basically I thought the worse.  Anyway to cut a long story short after 20 visit, I Manage to get a fast track appointment, good the appointment day) which was today) 9am). I couldn't sleep all night which the worry) I do suffer with bad anxiety.  I couldn't eat because you're not allowed to LOL.. Anyway my result..  hiatus hernia with  prolapsing gastric  mucosa. Single <1cm tongue of columnar  epitheimum.. diagnosis  oesophagus. Hiatus and oesophagitis/reflux. Causing all my problems! Can you believe it!  2x biopsy Don't be afraid it happens to everyone who has this procedure, I'm my opinion it's always good to know... I have the throat Spray.. trust me you don't need the sedation I didn't even gag once but then we're all  not not the same. My advice go for it instead of thinking what could it be.. You can put it to bed once and for all.. And move forward with your life.  Overall wasn't as bad as I thought... No sleep all night filled with worry thinking the worse it was horrible.. If you need any advice or any more info please message me..

  • Thank you for posting this. I have one next week and am anxious. I tend to shake when I'm nervous. I'm a nightmare!

let's hope mine is as good as yours

  • Hi

I have an update and that is that I have to have the endoscopy again this time they are going to try a drug called propofol and see if that works,  To be honest I am not sure that  I want to go through that again and I am also concerned that I am 16stone in weight and when I looked up the drug Propofol I have found out that is the drug they use to kill people with.

so not sure what to do about this I am thinking of asking them if there is another way to diagnose Celiac Disease and also I am also worried about wasting another 3 days of annual leave if I have to isolate 3 days before the test again.

    any advice would be appreciated.

    thank you

    Lindsey

  • I had Fentanyl 50mcg and Midazolam 3mg, knocked me out nicely.

  • I was supposed to be knocked out last time but it had no effect on me at all and I obviously don't want that to happen again because it is a total waste of time.

  • Hi,

I have another update, I am going for an Gastroscopy with propofol sedation on Friday 21st January at 7:30am.

I am still a bit nervous about it probably because I have never had propofol before and I am still worried that I won't wake up but maybe I am being daft because I will have an Anethestist with me at all times and they are their to keep you safe aren't they.

My consultant said it is a safe procedure, I was wondering if they have done this procedure with propofol on overweight people like myself.

I look forward to hearing your experiences of this.
