Don't be frightened of upper endoscopy

Please don't let horror stories from others put you off having an upper endoscopy. I had this procedure a few days ago with sedation, as I was very anxious about both the procedure and the possibility of worrying findings. I had the local anaesthetic throat spray, then 4mg of midazolam IV, which felt like about a half-bottle of wine but no more. I was relaxed but in no way 'out of it'. I was expecting to be asked to swallow the scope when it was introduced into my gullet, but before I was aware it had been inserted my endoscopist was already saying she was at the base of my stomach and telling me what she saw. The procedure was all over and done with in between 3 and 5 mins, including painless biopsies taken from 4 sites. At no point did I have any feeling of suffocation or even any gagging. Like I say, I felt the narrow 'snake' of a scope in my mouth but did not feel it going past my palate and into my gullet and stomach.

If anyone is also frightened of gastroscopy for fear of the results,  you are better off knowing the cause of your symptoms, and you might, like me, receive reassuring results! My endoscopy was urgent because of my symptoms of 'dysphagia', with food (especially bread and meat) sticking in my gullet and sometimes being regurgitated. I convinced myself I would have the stomach cancer which took my aunt. However, my endoscopist told me that I only have mild scarring at the junction of my gullet and stomach from a hiatus hernia, and some mild gastritis which could be H. pylori. I don't even have Barrett's Oesophagus, so am good to go with acid-reducing medications!

I am so happy now that I didn't let internet horror stories put me off taking what turned out to be a quick and barely uncomfortable procedure. Be brave and get it done- you'll be glad you did, whatever the outcome!

  • Hi Heather,

    Thanks for posting this.

My own experience over the years has been very similar to yours. If people are anxious that becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy as you need to be relaxed or sedated for it not to be too uncomfortable.

I don't normally have sedation as that way I get to look at the screen and discuss what's been seen with the endoscopist afterwards, but that probably goes back to when sedation wasn't ever offered.

    Glad your outcome was positive.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Dear Dave,

You've been a sterling supporter many years,so I feel privileged to receive a reply from you! Also delighted to learn that you are now free of the oesophageal cancer.

My next time would also be with just a local throat anaesthetic spray. But for any new anxious person there's no harm in a wee 4 mg midazolam jag to get you to attend and get through a unknown experience which will be far easier than you imagine.

    Kind regards,

    Heather

  • Hi all

I don't want this to be lengthy so I'll just get to it lol

I have a colonoscopy as well as an endoscopy this Sunday!
I've never had anything done like this before and very anxious!
I'm being sedated due to my age, but I've never been sedated before or even had really strong pain releif! My fear is, even though I'm sedated will I gag when the tube is going into my throat and when they remove it as well? I have a huge thing about being sick so it's really making me worry! And how long does it to take you to come round after sedation?

    Best wishes to all!

  • Hi Heather

just wondered if you have had your endoscopy yet, I've just got my appointment for December and overnight my blood pressure has increased just worrying about it.  Never been so frightened of it before.  I need to try and relax but it's hearing lots of horror stories that's putting me off

  • Hi

I am having a Gastroscopy on the 3rd August with sedation to see if I have celiac disease,  but I am scared that something is going to go wrong like a tear or bleeding. I have also heard that you can have problems with the sedation eg: breathing problems.

Any advice to put my mind at ease would be appreciated.  I want to get it done so that I know if I am celiac.

I look forward to hearing from you soon

  • I have copd and had no breathing problems. I had a sedation and a pain drug. I dont remember or felt a thing. They put a plastic mouth guard over my mouth, next thing I remember was waking up in recovery all high.

  • Hi Flower5757,

Thank you for your reply, is it a mild sedative injection they give you and do they monitor your breathing all through the procedure. I have never had one before so I am a bit nervous

So it is not that bad then,.

  • I had Fentanyl 50mcg (which I believe is a mild sedative and Midazolam 3mg (pain reliever) by IV. Yes they monitor your vital signs. I was really scared beforehand and didnt feel or remember anything. Would rather have an endoscope again than an mri, which made my arms and neck ache holding still. I'm in Oxfordshire. Hopefully your endoscope will be the same.

  • Thank you Flower 5757 I am in South Yorkshire and I hope my endoscopy is fine and has no problem
