Scared and Feeling silly (cervical)

Hi all,

Long story short, I'm afraid. A few months ago (4 or 5) I noticed minor changes to my cycle, nothing major but enough to make me notice. I've always had a discharge, and heavy/long periods (we have a family history of endometriosis which the GP put it down to). I started having spotting in between periods, nothing major and when I looked into it I thought it was ovulation spotting (the timings were almost perfect down to the day). I spoke to my GP about it, and ended up not getting a Gyn appointment.

My last two periods have been approx 5 days late each time, and now I have had spotting and a pink discharge for the past 5 days. I am calling for an appointment on Monday morning (my cervical smear is now due as of last week well, so I can time both at once).

I am incredibly anxious, as I'm worried that I should have had a gyn appointment when I first noticed changes those months ago, and now if it is cancer it will have spread and be too advanced to treat.

I am 27 and have been regularly to smear tests from 21,but I am very afraid and feeling so stupid and upset with myself.

Has anyone got any experience of the above symptoms, and if they were diagnosed late what treatment etc is like? Please accept my apologies for my excessive message above.

  • Hi Obtusifolia

Welcome to the forum, you’ve come to the right place for support. Can I start by first saying you have no reason to feel stupid though I can understand you feeling worried. You’ve been having regular smear tests, which would have screened for abnormal cells, and picked up anything out of the ordinary.

There can be many reasons for spotting which are not cancer, and are much more likely for you since you have had regular screening. Cervical cancer can take a long time to develop...years in fact..but normal smear tests mean that having cervical cancer would be very unlikely. Certainly not advanced!

I was diagnosed late because I DIDN’T attend regular screenings. But I’m more than twice your age, and I’m talking about not being tested for more than 20 years. Early stage cervical cancer can be treated by a hysterectomy, later stages typically are treated by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brachytherapy (internal radiation). I’m only telling you this because you have specifically asked about treatment, NOT because I think you will have cancer. I am not a doctor, and have no medical qualifications, only a lot of experience of this disease!

You MAY have abnormal cells, or something called a cervical ectropian, neither of which are cancer, and both of which can be dealt with by regular monitoring or a straightforward simple treatment. It’s probably much more likely to be something else though-hormonal, or contraceptive pill for example.

When your doctor carries out your smear, if he/she finds anything that looks out of the ordinary you may be referred for a colposcopy, which is basically a more detailed look at your cervix.

I hope this has put your mind at rest a little, try not to overthink your symptoms and please stay off doctor google, which will be of no help. Happy to try and help with any questions if I can. xx
