Inconclusive thyroid biopsy

Hi i new to the forum and i was needing some advice . I went to Doc for to check on my throat she notice lumps on both sides of my throat and some nodes was swollen i got urgent referral to ENT which i was told off for smoking and was told that its just i sore throat and to ho away and not bother him again not in exact words but that what he meant . I went bk to docs couple weeks later because i had feeling things were getting stuck in throat and that i felt presure on throat when neck was relaxed , she sent me for ultra sound which came bk multi nodule on both sides of thyroid and largest was 3.9 cm and also had mircoclacuim she sent me again as 2 week referal to ent which i was very relucant to go . I got same consultant which again was very dismissive , which i then decided i was going private . I went to see private consultant which  done ultra sound and biopsy which result showed thy3 3a on right side which was the largest and others were cysts  i had bi opsy repeated with same results. I am having right side thyroid removed on 19th december but im concerned on the left side just incase something has been missed can anyone advise me on this please.

  • Hello esc

In 2018 I had a 2cm lump on my thyroid which was removed by taking the left side of the thyroid gland. The biopsy showed it was benign but as a precaution they send the whole section removed for testing. They found a microscopic papillary cancer under the lump which then led to the other side being checked again by ultrasound. I was then discharged and told to contact them if I had the same feeling in my throat of fullness in the future. Luckily I haven't. So now on thyroxine tabs for the rest of my life. If you want to ask anything please feel free. Good luck next week. Xx

  • Hi thanks for reply hope you feeling ok . Can i ask after removal how long before results of section removed come back and how long for your recovery after removal  xxxx

  • Hi, I think it was about 2 to 3 weeks after the op. I had the op on a sunday and was allowed home on the Tuesday. They put a drain in your neck and depending on the ml collected, determines when you no longer need it and can leave the hospital. I had a check up appointment and stitches out at my gp about a week after the op which I made myself for my own peace of mind as I wanted to make sure there was no infection and preferred a nurse to do it for me. I then bathed the wound regularly with a saline solution and now have a very thin scar that nobody notices.

You will probably be back out and about within a week but don't rush to go back to work because you may feel very tired while your body adjusts. I slept a lot!

Make sure you ask the hospital when to get a thyroid blood test as like me you may need meds.

If you need any more info please feel free to ask. Meanwhile all the best. Xx Rose B

  • Im really so nervous about having operation its tomorrow and i feel really anixious . I have no option i got to get it done but i really feel like they need to take both lobes because the left hand side is the one that causing me problems but its the right they are removing so i feel after op im still going to be in same suituation as before op . I get a horrible feeling on left side like something stuck sometimes the left swells its does go down and plus i have a pea size lump in clavicle on both sides .  I  going bk to work on the 9th jan plus my job  on the phones so not be lifting anything or standing all day . I had a few people say it cant be cancer cause you piled the weight on not lost it and that im fretting for nothing it is just a cyst , which makes me feel like crap to be honset, i know im probably worrying for nothing but i lost both my parents to cancer and my nephew.

  • I can understand your worries but I was told once it's gone its gone. Thyroid cancer is very curable and they don't like to remove both sides unless it's absolutely necessary. When you go tomorrow, tell the consultant of your fears about the other side and ask him to check the clavicle lumps. It could all be related and will probably sort itself out when the ops done. If not, keep making them aware while you are under their care.

When you come round from the op they pump you with antibiotics and painkillers so you won't be in too much discomfort. The only thing that I found was I had to put my hand under my head to help lift it off the pillow for a couple of days because the muscles are weak in your neck, it soon feels better though.

Take your phone, charger and headphones so you can listen to music and rest without hearing everyone around you. I asked the nurse for an eye mask too, it helped me to sleep in the day.

All I can do is wish you well and a speedy recovery. By tomorrow evening it will all be over. Please let me know how you get on. Xx

  • Hi,

I just wondered how you are. I presume you've had your hemithyroidectomy and are at home resting now.

Did you manage to speak to the Consultant about your concerns with the other side etc?

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Xx

  • Hi  i had surgery a bit sore and uncomfortable , more the brusing to my chest  that hurts , i have to go get stitches out on 27th and back to consultant on the 6th jan for results . He told me the lump was bigger than they thought but op went well . Voice a little croaky but and i getting tingling in fingers and feet and mouth and get cold really quickly .  What is the weiredest thing is i have a big bruise on chest but it is in the shape of the thyriod its like a butterfly  very strange xx

  • Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I'm sure you will feel a lot more comfortable when the stitches are out, it's not surprising you feel bruised given that they have to cut through muscles to get to the thyroid. I hope all goes well with your follow up and wish you a peaceful Christmas and a happy New year xx.
