Thymoma

Hi I'm new here. I had a ct scan on my thyroid and it showed up a thymoma. Consultant said to do blood tests for myasthenia gravis, a pet scan and see a neurologist. He said the pet scan would show if the thymoma was benign or not.
however I have read that all thymomas are malignant and should be removed. I had the pet scan today not sure when my follow up appointment is yet.

if surgery isn't suggested should I get a second opinion? I feel very unwell at the moment, nauseous I have a sore throat and sore chest and I'm very tired.
thank you

  • Hello Mimismum

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been told you have a thymoma. It may be that the Consultant wants to wait for the results of your other tests and appointment with the neurologist before discussing treatment options with you. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for that appointment.

If following on from that discussion with the Consultant you're unhappy with the options discussed you could ask for a second opinion and you can find more information about that here. However it's probably best to wait and hear what he has to say first of all.

It might be worth you giving our team of nurses a call to talk things through with them. I'm sure that they will be able to offer some advice and information ahead of your next appointment and help with some questions that you may want to ask the Consultant. They're available on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
