Lump on side of neck

Over the past year a pea sized lump developed on the side of my neck. I didn't think anything of it until my mum told me it's got bigger and I should see the doctor.
I went to the doctors and she said she thinks it's fatty tissue but is going to send me for an ultra sound. I am petrified as I always assume the worst and my dad died from cancer 5 years ago. I've inserted a picture for reference.

  • Hi Jep,

I just joined the forum to reply to your post as the same thing has happened to me.

I have a lump like yours on the side of my neck and also swollen lymph nodes all on the right side.

My Dad died of laryngeal & neck cancer and I was obviously quite concerned.

I got a referral to ENT who referred me for an Ultrasound Scan to get it checked out.

Was told today that it definitely isn't cancer and that they think it is either swelling as a result of a strain/injury or a nerve being pressed in the spine which can also cause the same thing.

Apparently both of these things are much more common than I would have imagined and although I might need physiotherapy it isn't anything serious.

The only advice I can give is to go ah me get it checked out but try not to worry too much, like you I have a family history and I think sometimes this can lead your brain to jump to conclusions. If I'm honest there were no other signs that it was cancer (e.g no dramatic weight loss, felt quite healthy, no blood etc..) but it's easy to think the worst.

Sure you'll feel better getting it checked out though.

  • Thanks for the reply Galster!
I defo have health anxiety since the passing of my father as he was misdiagnosed for gallstones when he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer and passed away within 3 months! Obviously this completely turn my world upside down.

my anxiety has lessened over the years however I still get panic attacks from time to time! I'm very in tune with my body and know if I feel something. However anxiety in itself can cause very physical symptoms!

my mum is in the costemic beauty industry and believes it may be a cyst that has been slowly growing however I will wait and see for my ultrasound. I too havnt had any other symptoms like weight loss and night sweats so I think my mind it just going into overload
