Oncology appointment - can I go with my boyfriend to it?

Hello everyone! I have a bit of a weird question I suppose.

I got my ovarian cancer marker blood test results back last week, and it came back worrying so I was urgently reffered to a gynaecological oncologist. Two days before that appointment, I have an internal ultrasound (which had been book weeks ago, as a general check up due to large cysts that I had last year).

I read that the cancer marker blood test can come back high even if it's not cancer, but I have had a lot of the symptoms of ovarian cancer in the last year (e.g. bloating, bowel issues, pain, bleeding in between periods etc) so naturally I am expecting the worst (trying not to very hard!).

What I have been wondering, is whether I would be able to go into my gynaecologist appointment with my boyfriend? I want him there in case it's bad news, but I have no idea whether I will be allowed to? I don't want to insist on taking him into the appointment with me if it's generally frowned upon by doctors etc. Anyone have any experience of a similar situation?

(Btw, I will have the ultrasound without him around, he'll wait outside, but I don't want to be alone for the oncology appointment).

  • Hello strawberries

In my experience you are actively encouraged to take someone in with you. When you’re anxious and stressed another pair of ears is very useful as you may well miss some information.

I’ve had many appointments at gynaecology and it would be unusual to see someone go in on their own. Most people have their husband/partner or a friend/relative with them. I attend a number of hospitals for different appointments and all have had the same policy of encouraging you to have someone with you.

I wish you well with your appointment and do come back to chat if you’d like to. xx

  • Thank you, that's really reassuring! Ooh, I've just thought of another question that maybe you or someone else would be able to help me with.
Do you know when people tend to get their ultrasound reuslts in an urgent case like mine? Would be immediately after the ultrasound? Or (in my case) during the gynaecologist appointment which is 2 days after the ultrasound?

Sorry, I am completely new to this urgent testing thing, no one has told me when I should expect to get the reuslts so i'm being eaten up by anxiety!

  • I’ve not had an ultrasound personally so I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to that one. I received my biopsy results the following week, had then went on to have an mri and ct scan quickly afterwards.

Hopefully you won’t have long to wait! xx
