Waiting breast clinic appointment

Hi there

I saw GP last week after discovering large painless  hard mobile lump in breast. GP thought it was around 10cm. I have large breasts & only recently picked it up when lying down ..hadn't felt it in shower. She was reassuring as it is mobile. I have no family history but made referral to breast clinic. Appointment came in today but it's nearly 5 weeks away! Is this normal?

Would love to hear others experience

Many thanks

Pinni

  • Hi Pinni,

I also found a large lump on my breast, I found it on the Wednesday and got my appointment the following week at the breast clinic.  I'm guessing it depends on the waiting lists at each hospital.  I was surprised at the speed I got the breast appointment but i guess each area is different.

  • I think you are right Liz. I just called clinic to check and they said it is due to current clinic numbers. Just disappointing & worrying that not going to be seen for another 4 weeks ...

  • I did just have a look at waiting times on the NHS webiste and it stated for urgent referrals its 2 weeks, otherwise it can be up to 18 weeks.

I have posted the link for you.

  • Hi Pinni,

Just wanted to share my story as it sounds like we have had fairly similar experiences so far. I'm 33 and also found a largeish (3cm) highly mobile and smooth lump about two weeks ago. Again, I was in bed when my hand plonked upon it – there was very little sleeping that night!

I actually just came back from my appointment at the breast clinic today which was almost two weeks after going to my GP. I had an ultrasound and a core-needle biopsy and the experience, although not fun, was very doable. The ladies who examined and undertook the tests were wonderful and the biopsy was much easier than I anticipated. They did say that the lump being smooth and movable was a good sign and that it is likely a fibromaeda. I'm just waiting on biopsy results to be sure.

Although no one but a medical expert can put your mind at rest, it does sound like your initial symptoms are positive. The waiting is a killer though – could you chase up your GP or the clinic to find out about cancellations? A small positive to take from the longer wait may mean that your GP feels strongly that it is likely to be benign.

Best of luck with your journey. I hope you get good news soon.

  • Hi! So sorry to hear that you have a long wait and how worried you are. I’ve been referred to the breast clinic today after experiencing pain in my breast for several weeks and a swollen armpit. No actual lumps (that I can find but a definite puffiness).  I got a call this afternoon with an appointment for tomorrow from the breast clinic which has now really concerned me that they are concerned! I guess short wait, long wait, just the act of being referred is so stressful and we read into it loads. All the best with your referral, I hope the wait goes by quickly for you!

  • Thank you! And it is very true what you say. Hope all goes ok with your appointment tomorrow
