‘Urgent’ appointment for results. Bad news?

Hello. I’m new here so I’m not really sure if I’m posting in the right place. Sorry if I’m not, but I really wanted some advice.

A week ago I had a bone biopsy to check for possible bone mets that was inconclusive on scans. I’ve had a call to go in for a (according to the secretary) ‘urgent’ appointment during clinic next week. Does this guarantee that it’s going to be bad news? I’m desperately hoping ‘urgent’ also means ‘last minute’ because I didn’t have an appointment booked in to get my results, but...I don’t know. Right now my head is spinning and I’ve convinced myself it has to be bad news. It’s just the use of the word ‘urgent’ that’s throwing me off.

  • Hi Bookworm and welcome to the forum.

I think it's only natural to worry when the word urgent is involved but if you can try not to jump to any conclusions until you've had the appointment.

I know that's much easier said than done but hopefully some of our members who have been in simialr situations will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

Our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to have a chat with them about this as well.

Fingers crossed all turns out o.k when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

    Hiya

I know, the terminology they use hardly is reassuring is it!

I was called back for an urgent appointment with my doctor and my mind went into overdrive, it's only normal. It did turn out in the end there was something wrong further down the line, but I asked why they said urgent for that appointment and he said it's so you don't book in a routine appointment which has a waiting time of 4-6 weeks. So for me it was a case that they needed to see me sooner than that, that there was nothing imminently wrong and no imminent bad news but that they needed to scale it to urgent so that I wasn't waiting up to a month and a half.

I know that might not necessarily be reassuring but I hope it helps somehow

    Sending best wishes

    Rose

  • Hi

I have been through this a few times, it's awful isn't it. Your mind runs away with i'ts self and you imagine the worst possible outcome.

They do have a stupid way of doing these things, if only they would give more details on the phone.

I hope your appointment is soon and then at least yore not left dangling for too long not knowing one way or the other.

My last experience of this was in the summer, I had womb lining biopsies and had an appointment for 2 weeks later for the results. After a few days I got a phone call from a specialist nurse.... can I go in the next morning.... complete horror.. I said does this mean bad news then, she said not necesserily I said had the results come back.. she said I can't discuss this over the phone.... I was convinced it was bad news. After much worry and a sleepless night I turned up for my appointment in tears. The first thing the Dr said was... your biopsies are fine we just want to make you an appointment to go to sleep for the camera just to make 100% sure we haven't missed anything.... My god! I was relieved but why? If she has said on phone nothing to worry about but can you get in tomorrow, that would have made all the difference.

I hope this gives you some relief and I hope everything turns out ok for you.
