Confused about Lymph node biopsy

Hiya,

A little background to my problem. I've had a swollen lymph node on my neck for around 1 year. At the start the year I felt really rubbish, just super tired all the time and having to take a nap in the middle of the day just to function normally, I also kept getting recurring mouth sores etc and was just generally run down. I went to the GP who first did bloods - these came back all good around March time.

I was referred to ENT for the lump after this. Had my first appointment with them around June time and they requested an US and fine needle biopsy on the lump which I had in October. During the ultrasound the consultant said it looked like a reactive lymph node but she would take the biopsy to be sure. Obviously I left this appointment feeling great and thinking that would be that. However I recieved a follow up appointment with ENT. That was last week and the consultant said that the US looked like a reactive node and that the biopsy 'somewhat agreed' so they want me back to do the US and biopsy again in 8 weeks.

Of course I'm kicking myself for not asking what he meant by 'somewhat' now and also why if its reactive if need to go back. But at the time I was a little shocked since I just expected him to say the same thing the lady who did the US said. So really what I'm wondering is if anyone else has experienced this and why did they need to repeat the tests. I figure if they were worried about anything they would have said and also had me back in quicker but I also don't understand.

In terms of how I feel all together I feel mostly better than I did at the beginning of the year except for the tiredness.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Xx

  • Hi there,

I can't really help much, we're at the stage of waiting for the CT scan (this Friday) and then the biopsy (the following Friday). I'm a bit surprised it's taken so long for your tests to happen? We only had to wait 4 weeks (but maybe that's a bad sign for us...)

All I know is that a fine needle biopsy isn't the best for diagnosing things. The best one is when they cut out a bit of your lump and take it away for testing! But it's a good thing that they said the  biopsy 'somewhat agreed' as opposed to 'somewhat disagreed'...

  • Hiya,

Thank you for your reply. I hadn't looked at his response that way so appreciate you pointing that out.

I think the wait has been so long because I'm considered low risk as I'm 31. Although I havent asked. All the waiting is frustrating but again I think maybe it's a good thing.

I hope the CT scan and biopsy go well. Xx
