Skin cancer biopsy follow up appointment

Hi everyone,

Apologies if this has already been discussed. I was just wondering if anyone could share a little info.

I had a mole removed a few weeks ago (6 Nov) and have just received a letter from the NHS saying I've had an appointment booked for me with the same dermatologist I've been seeing. I can only assume this is about my results.

On my stitches after-care sheet they said that if I was offered another appointment, I should bring someone with me. Is this likely going to be a bad news appointment? Or would they want to see me in person to tell me the results were fine?

Thanks a lot

  • Hi there,

I have had melanoma although this was10 years ago. So far I have survived it and it was at stage 2.

I’m sorry but I don’t know whether or not you being called in for an appointment has any meaning. I had a phone call from the dermatologist to tell me the news.

Try not to worry too much, though, because a high proportion of melanomas are caught before they spread and so even if you do have it, the chances are it will be removed in time. I hope this helps you.

I have an appointment tomorrow to find out if my newly diagnosed lung cancer is operable or not so I know how stressful this situation is.

Good luck. Do what you can not to worry. I’ll be thinking of you.

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to reply Joy.

I wish you luck tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you too.

  • Hey there

Im a nurse in the plastics/dermatology setting (currently on leave however due to my own breast cancer treatment).

From personal experience id advise try not to worry yourself too much at the moment, easier said than done I know having been on the receiving end of waiting for a biopsy result, it’s scary and your mind always goes to the worst possible scenario.

I can’t comment for other hospitals but in my department we routinely book follow up appointments for everyone that has a biopsy of suspicious moles/lesions to ensure that everyone gets followed up. It may not be good news that you get at your appointment but also it’s not necessarily going to be bad news.

There are many different types and grades of skin cancer all varying in degree of severity. Some skin cancer treatments are quite simple so to speak so even if you have a cancer it’s not all doom and gloom. Treatment has come a long way. Hopefully your consultant discussed what it could be with you at your first consultation.

It is always advisable to have someone to come with you though to your appointment, if it is a skin cancer diagnosis regardless of what type having an extra pair of ears and someone for support is always helpful.

i hope this helps somewhat and all the best for your appointment

    Laura x

  • Thanks very much Laura.

I'm going to try not to worry too much. I'm sure that whatever it is will be okay.

  • Hi,

Laura has given you great information. Most consultants prefer to give results, good or bad, face to face rather than by letter or phone. It may be good news but they may want to check the operation site and any other moles you have. Take someone along with you and hopefully they will be surplus to requirements!! Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • I will do Angie. Thanks a lot :)

  • Hi Laura,

I read your post and l too have been called back for results in about 10 days, don't know whether its good as it's 10 days away so maybe good news but l did have a mole removed some three years ago and that was Basel cell and this one l have just had removed was a lot bigger so l am kind of concerned. Also l did have this mole for about 18 months and finally noticed how big it had got why had l missed it?

I wish you well with your breast cancer treatment my twin sister has just received tg3 all clear for her breast cancer diagnosis.

so again because cancer is in the family my mum and older sister died of cancer why oh why did l not go sooner ...

would be grateful for any reassurance

    many thanks
