Colposcopy

Hi

I'm 40yrs old and only recently had my 1st ever cervical screen (smear)

Results indicated high grade Dyskaryosis and HPV+

Referred for urgent colposcopy which I attended. The nurse specialist was explaining about cell changes etc then she said 'or it could be the other' I said "other??? as in cancer?" She said "I'm not going to lie to you, it could be cancer!

She then carried out the colposcopy, removed precancerous cells and took a sample.

I had already asked her when to expect the results to be told by middle of next week, she would phone me.

After the procedure the HCA was explaining aftercare and said "you will get your results in 4 weeks" the nurse specialist interrupted saying "no she'll get them sooner, by mid next week" yet standard is minimum of 4weeks.

I've been so worried the fact 'cancer' has been mentioned, the fact I've left it so long before being screened, worried that maybe they know more than what they're letting on hence why they're rushing the results.

Would a smear indicate any more than abnormal cells? Because the nurse specialist had said cancer and when I'd receive results BEFORE the colposcopy.

I haven't been sleeping with worry. I have another 3-4 day wait before receiving results.

I know I've been completely ignorant with leaving it so long to have my 1st smear which also worries me because I don't know how long these abnormal cells have been there for and 15yrs would give plenty of time for precancerous cells to develop into cancer.

If anyone could give me any reassurance or have had a similar experience would be very much appreciated. :|

  • Hello.I'm in exactly the same position I'm 34 have never had a smear until i started bleeding between periods, then had a miscarriage and had to have a scan to make sure my womb was clear, where i was told i had an ovarian cyst ,continued to bleed between peroids after miscarriage finally went to the doctor and told her about cyst ,bleeding between cycles and she ordered a c125 test for ovarian cancer, came back normal so then she asked for a smear which i bleed through ,nurse called in the doctor who looked and said my cervix was bloody and strange looking so she refered me for urgent colascopy which the gynecologist said he was certain I had cancer, biospies sent off came back i have high grade dyskaryosis so NOT cancer I'm going into have lletz procedure on the5th of this month there putting me to sleep to do it as it's such a large area, hopefully yours will be the same, there was alot of hushed voices etc when the gynecologist said he was sure it was cancer and mri scans arranged very previous but it's good to know there on it xx

What a terrible time you're having.. so sorry to hear about you're miscarriage

I really don't think they should mention the 'C' word before any test results have come back. It's really not fair on the patient.

All the best with your procedure, let us know how it goes.

    Big hugs. Xx

  • Hi Cat

They shouldn’t mention cancer at this stage because they don’t know without a biopsy. It’s only a biopsy that will give a definitive answer. My gynaecologist took 2 punch biopsies and still only said he could see a lesion on my cervix where in fact it was a visible tumour. He still didn’t mention cancer until my biopsy results confirmed it, though he must have been pretty certain when he could see it! I was told I would need to return in a week for my results, and he told me not to go on the holiday I was due to go on. So I’m sure he knew, but couldn’t say until the biopsies were tested.

I’m sorry you are going through all this stress...I don’t believe nurses should make any assumptions without knowing for sure, and certainly shouldn’t upset patients like this. It might be cancer, but equally it might not. Finding out quickly is a good thing however, because you then you will know for sure what you are dealing with. Try not to panic too much for now. Happy to help with any questions if I can-I was diagnosed in September 2018. xx

  • Hi Minska

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

Totally agree "cancer" should NOT be mentioned  untill confirmed. Maybe it was a scare tactic so I attend my regular checks, if so it's bloody worked!

If you don't mind me asking what stage are you at with your cancer, undergoing treatment?

How has it affected your daily activities of life? Have you been well supported?

    All the best.

    Big hugs.

  • Hi Cat

Diagnosed stage 2b. Finished treatment Christmas Eve 2018. Told in April 2019 no evidence of disease. Been fine up till October when something tiny was spotted during a check up, so I’ve had an mri, pet scan and biopsy under anaesthetic and get the results on December 9th.

It took me a couple of months after treatment to feel normal again and I’ve had a good few months. I felt pretty drained through the treatment to be fair-it’s quite harsh, but it does get good results. I did get very tired and had bladder and bowel side effects, which most ladies do to some degree or another.

I didn’t tell many people I had cancer until after my treatment finished. I rely on my partner and one close friend for support...everyone else just melted away and no-one bothers even to ask how I am! I realised quickly who I could rely on.Hope you have better support if you need it. xx

  • Morning.

Thank you for being so open, this forum/ you have given me so much while my mind has been in over drive. Very much appreciated

It's always times like these you realise your true family and friends, definitely hold onto those that have shown you support.

I do hope your results this month come back good.

I'll keep you posted about mine.

    Have a lovely Sunday xx

  • Hi Cat

I’ll be sticking around here, and will check for your updates. Its funny..I’m very private generally in life and don’t tell people my business...hardly anyone even knows what cancer I have..it’s like my little bit of control over something I otherwise have no control over and it’s personal to me. But I’m happy to be open on a forum like this if I can help out because I know the fear of waiting for tests and results and I understand. I hope your results are not as bad as you might anticipate from that nurse. That was a bit cruel. Fingers crossed. xx
