Waiting for endometrial biopsy results

I am 52 and had two tiny polyps removed three years ago after becoming symptomatic with irregular bleeding. They were biopsied and normal. Symptoms resolved and periods returned. Three years later I have not had a period in 8 months and had spotting again. Ultrasound found a tiny daughter cyst in right ovary (no cause for concern) a small fibroid and a tiny polyp and a thickened and irregular endometrium lining of 12.2mm. Doppler was also used and highlighted multiple bright spots and increased blood flow. I was fast tracked for a hysteroscopy and biopsy which I had on Thursday and was told the wait for results would be two weeks. I was hoping to see the dr who performed the procedure afterwards to ask his opinion on what it looked like but I only saw the ward doctor who basically read from the notes (and said I'd had a D&C which I had not heard I was having so was confused) and just said polyp removal and endometrial biopsy. Vague and unforthcoming. Does anyone out there look at the ultrasound findings as described above and think I should be worried? And more importantly, how long is the real wait for results? Will they ring me if bad? I have been given no follow up appointments.

  • Hi Zoe

i had a uterine polyp removed and received the results a week later via a telephone call from a nurse. The waiting was difficult and you imagine all sorts of scenarios and outcomes.

Did the hospital give you a contact name to speak to for advice and support? It’s so easy to miss these things when you are going through stressful procedures.

i suppose things are kept vague at this stage because your medical team has to wait for the results before the next steps (if any) are decided.

I know it’s cliche but try to keep busy and distract your imagination while you wait for results.

Best wishes to you and here’s hoping for good news

  • Thank you Deb. Can I ask were your results normal? That's fast results. I have no follow up or number so left in a sort of limbo.

  • Hi Zoe

It was the nurse from the hysteroscopy ward who called me with the results that the polyp contained cancerous cells. So I guess that explains the need for speed. I saw the consultant a week later so that makes two weeks I guess for the ‘official verdict’.

I know the waiting is hard but don’t let your imagination run away with itself. Everyone advises keeping busy and staying positive and that’s good advice. The main thing is whatever the cause of your symptoms, it’s being investigated and hopefully you will  receive  good news soon.

best wishes and keep us updated x

  • Your story sounds exactly like mine . The doctor who performed my biopsy wasn't my usual consultant. He was so blasé with me and said any bleeding is down to me now as I chose not to have a merina coil fitted . When I asked if I'm expected to post menopause bleed forever  now he shrugged his shoulders ! He told me he'd write to my gp with results .
my lining was measured by TVS at 20mm so naturally I'm worried .
how did you eventually get your results ?
