4.5cm Ovarian Cyst

I posted a couple of months ago regarding prolonged monthly bleeding. Since then I have had 2 pelvic ultrsounds and CIN blood test. My initial unltrasound (done privately as I was very worried and didn't want to wait 6 weeks) showed a few small fibroids, bulky uterus and 4.5cm cyst on one ovary. The sonographer said cyst would most likely disappear but get it checked at 6 weeks and put forward CIN blood test.

CIN came back within normal range (went back to NHS at this point).  Had to hand over my private ultrasound report to my GP as nothing had been sent onto them. Had NHS ultrasound yesterday, sonographer had no information on previous ultrasound so told her what I was told.

Basically same result but cyst has been classed as a dermoid rather than something that could disappear on its own which has got me panicked. Sonographer said I would be passed to gynocologist for fibroid treatment but didn't seem concerned about cyst.

I don't have any discomfort with cyst and initially went to GP as periods were lasting around 10 days and heavier.  I am 44 and thought it was hormonal. I had a polyp removed on cervix recently (although when I had smear done recently GP said there was a small part left). Smear came back with no HPV.

Question - should I be worried about cyst?

Grateful for anyone's experiences xx

  • Hiya, so sorry to hear about your dermoid, how are you getting on? Did you have surgery? My sister was diagnosed with an immature teratoma last week measuring 24x24x15, sounds similar in size to yours. She has surgery next week.
    wishing you well x

  • Hello everyone,

I thought I would write back as Covid has had a delay in sorting my problems out.  I had another transvaginal scan back in July and cyst grown to 5cm (slight 0.5cm growth). Still thought to be a dermoid.

I am booked in for hysteroscopy on 1st December from a cancelled operation in March due to Covid.

My periods have been hideous over the last few months. I am 45 years old which might be a factor also. I had a long gap between one period then the next period went on for two weeks. This most recent period produced a clot the size of my palm on day one - thank goodness only smaller ones after this.

I know I have a few small fibroids - no idea how big. The last gynaecologist said that there may be a uterine polyp. I think I still have a cervical polyp (2 removals but apparently still there).

I will be having an ablation done at the time of the hysteroscopy. I refused a womb biopsy last December as I heard how painful they can be so no idea if I am cancer free (crossing everything).

    Will keep you posted.

    Take care all xx
