CA125 test

Hi all,

I had an ultrasound last weekend due to constant bleeding between periods. They discovered a cyst on my right ovary, which after a bit of research seems quite normal, but my doctor wants to do a CA125 blood test immediately. Should I be concerned or is this usual procedure?

TIA for you help!

  • Hi, I just had large cyst removed which was attached to  ovary. 2 months or so ago I went to Dr's with huge abdomen like I was pregnant and other symptoms including almost constant bleeding. Thought it was menopause. Luckily my Dr arranged for blood test, and they then found raised level of ca125. Yes I was concerned and did lots of Internet research and got myself convinced something bad was happening, after seeing a couple of consultants and having scans and ct scan I was told best thing would be full hysterectomy, everything out with the large cyst attached as it could be possible that it was cancerous. I know it's hard to not worry but I had hysterectomy and 45cm cyst removed on a Tuesday and was home on the Saturday afternoon and I felt fine. (AND 2.5 stones lighter!) 4 weeks later saw consultant and the cyst was borderline stage 1a pre cancerous, lowest possible and no further treatment needed, and no hrt for me. Now its 6 weeks later since my op and I feel perfectly normal and very happy. I had mentally prepared myself as much as one can for a different outcome as I was convinced I had cancer, but I never did fortunately. But I guess why I am writing is to say that having the blood test does not mean you have cancer. It's a good thing to have the test to help rule out or, know what's going on. I have amazed myself how I dealt with my whole experience as someone who is extremely queasy, squeamish and feels faint at anything medical and has fear of hospitals! Try and keep positive but also be prepared is what I was told and that did help. Hope all goes well for you.
