Enlarged tonsil with white lump

Hello. Four days ago I discovered a white lump at the bottom of one of my tonsils. I can feel it when I swallow and it feels like there is something stuck in my throat. The tonsil is also bigger than the other one and looks a bit misshapened. I went to see an out of hours gp yesterday (Saturday) who described it as a 'pustule'. He said we should treat it as an infection to start with and prescribed me antibiotics. He told me to see my normal gp should the lump not go. I have a lump on my thyroid on the same side which was diagnosed as a benign nodule in the summer. I am getting occasional throbbing and light aching around the whole of the same side, on my neck and up to my ear. I suffer with tonsil stones but this lump is definitely not one. I am worried and thinking the worse. I would appreciate any advice and to hear if anyone has has similar symptoms. Thank you.

  • Yeah I have learnt my lesson, so had the ENT tonight and basically he said the white lines is just some scarring of the tonsil tissue from past throat infections. He put a camera up my nose and into my throat and felt around my neck and tonsils and basically said it is nothing to worry about! Debris in the tonsil can calcify and create a tonsil stone. He said if I was prone to sore throats all the time I could get them removed, but seeing as I get a sore throat every now and then he did not recommend the surgey which is fair enough! He then reaffirmed me at the end that the white bump is nothing to worry about, soo I am very happy with that!

Thanks for the thread and support on here! Deffo helped.

  • Hi I see your post about going private, if you don't mind me asking, was it a lot of money getting all them test?

    many thanks

  • Hi Alex,

It was expensive, it was £180 but I have a decent income and honestly you cannot put a price on your health. What I do worry about is people who cannot afford that and waiting on their GPs during Covid. I was sitting in the house for almost 2 months worrying about it Googling all sorts, which the Author of this post suggested you do NOT do lol. I tried ringing my GP over the course of 2-3 weeks everyday but they kept telling me to try again tomorrow due to Covid, and when I did get through on the phone they gave me antibiotics and a spray which lasted 10 days. I knew it was not an infection so one night I went F it and googled nearest Private GP and booked the ENT session online for the following day.

I Waited about an hour then got called in and he said nothing to worry about just calcium deposit gathered which is normal. He felt around my throat and inside, which was not pleasant then the camera up the nose down the thorat. Honestly if you cannot get to ur GP I would recommend you go private, you will feel much better after as chances are you are fine. Then you can have a bottle a win and chill lol

    All the best!

  • Thank you, I'm currently waiting for a private clinic to get back to me as I have so many symptoms of something going on, it's driving me mad. Feel like I can't stay off google and I'm getting worse for it, I need to get this sorted, I have two young children to look after, currently having to take time off work because I feel so I'll and low, glad everything was ok with you, put your feet up and enjoy life now

  • Yeah but I was also feeling that way, until I done my own head in and said enough is enough. Chances are you are fine, I found being in Lockdown for the better part of a year really exacerbated my OCD and Anxiety to the point where I became a hypochondriac now worrying about every illness and disease. I partly blame the media & scaremongering of the BBC during these times, it is only normal.

Let me know how you get on!

  • I totally agree with you there, I don't think it helps I work in a care home so everything is covid covid covid, I've spoke to 4 different doctors in the space of 2 weeks all of them have said it might be covid. It's not I get tested 3 times a week. I feel like GP have forgot about all other problems but covid now

will do, I've got bloods booked in for Wednesday( and that's only because a family friend ( who is a nurse at my GP) said she would do it for me if not I would of had to wait until the 10th for a quick 2 min appointment to take bloods

  • Hello kittens in mittens

I have the exact same as you too

im on antibiotics and mouth drops but it doesn't seem to be getting better, in fact my throat and ear is feeling discomfort, I sent a picture of it to the doctor and she said it looks like tonsil stone but I said no it's not as I suffer with them and it's not the same. I might go private because it's a night mare trying to get someone to see you .
