Petrified of my semi-solid ovarian cyst

This forum is really amazing - I've stumbled across it when I was researching what I was told this week and I'm looking to see if anyone can shed any light on what to expect over the coming weeks please?

My story so far.....

So I've had very heavy periods, lots of pelvic and back pain, spotting/irregular bleeding, incontinence for a fair while now, but have done the adult thing of ignoring it all, until these past two weeks. I finally visited my GP as the symptoms had worsened and I thought it would be a simple "you've got a urinirary tract infection/kidney infection - have some antibiotics and go home". Test results were negative and the pain persists so back to the GP I go on Monday this week. When I go back, the GP takes some swabs and is automatically concerned due to the bleeding that started as soon as she touched my cervix. She refers me for an urgent ultrasound appointment which I went to yesterday. The ultrasound operator had a good look around, it was incredibly painful and tender which obviously it isn't meant to be. Then when checking the left ovary, she discovers a mass which she tells me is just a Dermoid and I leave the appointment feeling utterly relieved that there isn't anything sinister going on in there, possibly an infection to cause the tenderness and some weird hairy, tooth lumpy mass that is just causing a few issues in there for me.

I get a text from my GP surgery a short while after my scan, telling me that the swab results were back and I had an infection. Amazing - problem solved - nothing sinister, the "C" word hasn't been mentioned and I can get on with my life.

An hour later, I get a call from my GP telling me to go immediately for a CA125 blood test to check for the Ovarian Cancer markers and to expect a call from the Gynaecology Mass Specialist Department in the next 48 hours as I had been referred to the fast track clinic. Complete and utter shock is an understatement and a complete rollercoaster of emotions. I explained that I had been told all was ok in my Ultrasound and it was "just" a Dermoid, but the GP explained that the Ultrasound can't determine what the mass actually is and with it having areas of solidity coupled with my other symptoms, that it needs to be looked at immediately to check whether it is cancerous. Queue emotions of anger at the ultrasound operator for telling me I was fine and confusion that this is now all happening.

Off I trot to the Hospital to get my bloods taken and I get a call from the Gynaecology department asking me to come in on Tuesday next week for my appointment.

Has anyone had a similar exprience that can shed any light on what may happen at my appointment? I'm worrying myself silly about what they might do at the appointment.

I'm absolutely petrified that this is happening and whilst I should take comfort in the fact that my GP and the hospital are working so quickly to get everything checked, that is also filling me with fear that it is something quite serious going on to warrant the urgency.

I'm trying to keep positive and stay calm, but I just want it all to go away!

  • Hi Sian and welcome to the forum.

It can be scary when things move quickly but if you can, try to stay calm and not jump to any conclusions until all the tests have been carried out and the results have been reviewed together. Hopefully some of our members will share what happened at their gynaecology appointments with you soon but if you'd like to talk things through with someone do give our cancer nurses a call. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

Wishing you all the best for Tuesday Sian.

    Kind regards,

  • im so glad someone else has posted about this.  i have done a post but no replies yet.

sorry bit of a long reply

i have been having bleeding sometimes every 2 weeks. like periods. extra discharge. very bad pelvic pain that radiates down into my leg. constipation and urinating more. i went to the gp a few weeks ago and she sent urgent referal to a gyny. i then had 2 letters a week later 1 saying i had a colposcopy booked and the other saying i had been refered to gyny. i went for colposcooy and the nurse signed me off. i waited another 4 weeks and still nothing from gyny and the pain had started being constant. so i phoned the gp back. turns out the referal to gyny didnt have all the symptoms on so they had just sent me to colposcopy and i had been discharged completely and been left. so gp sent for an ultrasound. that was the wednesday. had a phone call on the Monday to go in for a scan next day.  the transvaginal was very painful. the technician was there ages. afterwards she said that she could see my fallopian tube which doesnt usually show. and that  it had fluid in.  but that she cdnt tell me anything else and results would be with gp by end of the week. so she phoned yesterday morning. my prolactin level is raised and there is 'an extremely abnormal cyst' (her words) on my left ovary. which has different textures to it. so im assuming this means theres solid components? she didnt mention the fluid and me being in a tiz forget to ask about it. im being referred to gyny again under the urgent suspected cancer route and should be hearing off them sometime next week i think.

its the waiting and not knowing exactly whats going on thats the worst isnt it? 2nd guessing everything.  i did think that maybe its just a dermoid beause of her saying different textures. but then thought. wait. they could tell on the scan if it was that wouldnt they?

  • Hi Bethan

Sorry I haven't replied until now. Have you had your scans etc?

I've got to go in for surgery next week as it appears to be a dermoid that I have and it's starting to make my ovary twist. The ca125 levels came back low so gynae is fairly certain all is fine (massive relief).

    Hope you're ok? X

  • Hi sian

im so sorry i just saw this! yes i had an ultrasound and transvaginal which found fluid in my fallopian tube and an extremely abnormal cyst that has different textures. my gp sent a suspected cancer referal 4 weeks ago. i have been phoning the hospital since week 1 and kept getting told it was with a consultant waiting to be graded. finally on thursday i was put through to someone else and it turns out my referal wasnt with a consultant. it was just in limbo. i had been lost in the system (again) and should of been  seen the 1st week that the referal was sent. the woman has sorted everything out  now and my case should be getting talked about in the mdt meeting on wednesday. hopefully we will finally know whats going on.

  • I am so sorry to hear that you're still waiting for answers. I can't imagine how frustrating the wait has been for you.

I have everything crossed for you for tomorrow. If you ever need to vent, I'm always here.

  • i know. the waiting is worse really. how did your surgery go. any results back yet? i think mine could be a dermoid but then i think, wouldnt they have told me at the scan or on the phone that it was

  • hi sian i was wondering how your surgery went and if your results were back yet. how are you feeling?  my case went to mdt and been passed to a normal gyny who i see next week so will hopefully have some answers
