Several lumps appearing in neck

Hi

this is the first I’ve wrote on this forum myself but I feel like I’m losing my mind. A few months ago I noticed a pea size lump on my neck and the doctor told me to wait a few weeks to see if it went away. I forgot about it and 2 months later remembered and it was much bigger. I went back to gp who sent an urgent referral to ent and sent me for a chest X-ray. I was told X-ray results will take 4 weeks to come back to gp and I’m still waiting on ent. I now have 3 superclavical neck lumps on right hand side and 1 swollen lump on the left hand side. Doctor has said it isn’t swollen nodules and I am going out of my mind as they just seem to keep appearing. Has anyone experienced anything like this.

My dad had some sort of lymphoma in the past  and I am trying to relax and defo have not been googling anything because I am anxious enough but I just feel so worried and helpless.

  • Hello Maxis-mummy
I'm sorry to hear that you're worried about the lumps that you've recently found. I can see from your other posts that your GP has said they are mostly likely cysts but has referred you for some tests.

We know from our members here that waiting for tests and results can be a particularly difficult time and it's a sensible step to not try and Google for information as this will only make you more worried.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your results and that you have some reassurance soon.
    Best wishes,

  • Hi there,

I'd like to provide a small amount of reassurance. I am a 23 year old woman, otherwise very healthy. My symptoms were similar to yours - I had a soft, painless, pea-sized lump on the central left side of the front of my neck. It was moveable and felt slightly deeper (i.e. not just below the skin). I had not had any reason to believe this was due to infection as I had not been ill for ages. I had noticed it only recently, however alongisde noticing it I had been waking up recently with severe night sweats (soaked bed clothes in the morning) - another early symptom of Hogkins Lymphoma. I panicked and imediately concluded I must have cancer. All the signs added up, I was absolutely convinced. I was also sure it wasnt a fatty lump (Lipoma) as it was too deep and too small, which led to two possible diagnoses: a cyst or an enlarged (and possibly early cancerous) lymphoma. I suddenly panicked and had never felt more terrified in my life. I read this thread which I admit, panicked me to a greater degree. I was lucky enough to be able to pay for a private GP who saw me instantly. She said it was concerning enough to have bloods taken and to have an ultrasound (which I had that afternoon). I am pleased to say that it was not cancer. They have diagnosed it as a cyst (not 100% certain but very sure) .There was no evidence of it having an established blood supply (which is characteristic of a tumour).

I am posting this to demonstrate that whilst you might freeze in panic and automatically expect the worst, it does not mean that you have cancer. That being said, it is worth getting checked in case as the doctor told me that if you are diligent (like me) and catch it early, the prognosis is excellent. She has a friend who survived a Lymphoma even at a slightly later stage, and now is living a perfectly normal life with two youg children.

  • hi emily thank u very much for ur reply and I am glad your tests have all been clear

i have my ent appointment through now which is xmas eve. My chest X-ray results came back clear which is great so I just need to wait to see the specialist. The waiting is the worst but I’ll just need to pull on my big girl pants and try and just wait and as many have said most of the time it is nothing to worry about. Best to get it checked. The only reason I am probably worried is my dad had lymphoma but I’m doing all The right things getting it checked and the doctor even sent me to the dentist for checks and everything is good so far. So I’m hoping on xmas eve I get good news but I know it will probably be just afterwards if I need tests. Fingers crossed it’s all good and like u all comes out as cysts

  • Hi Maxis-mummy

I am really pleased your X ray has come back fine. Luckily, to my knowledge, Lymphoma's are not hereditary. Specialists do not know why they appear - they're very rare. I am sorry to hear your father had it though and I can understand that this will of course make you worry more. There is no reason to believe in any connection between his diagnosis and the potential of yours however.

Statistics are overwhelmingly in your favour that this is a cyst. They seem quite common - I had one in my bottom lip only recently also!

Best of luck and please feel free to ask more questions if you'd like.
