Tonsil lump

Hi all,

I know I am probably getting ahead of myself here but I just need to speak about this and get my worries off my chest!

For a few months now, I have had a lump on my right tonsil which just appeared. Alongside this, I have had intermittent ear ache which may last just a few seconds and more recently, intermittent ache in jaw and in back of neck (again, only lasting a few seconds perhaps a few times throughout the day). I feel generally okay in myself apart from perhaps a bit tired, however it's been a busy few weeks at work. My throat has not been overly sore apart from when I tend to strain it more (I am a teacher so have to use my voice a lot).

I went to my GP today and she has referred me to ENT under the 2 week wait. I am just very worried about what they might discover. I am a light smoker (3/4 a day) which I massively regret. I am only 28 years old and am really worried. Just looking to talk to anyone with similar experiences.

  • Hi G,

There are many reasons why you might be displaying symptoms and referal is always a good thing to get checked out although the majority referals are not anything sinister.

Given symptoms have been there a few months, its good you have an early appointment to have a specialist look at rather than GP.
Let me know how you get on with appointment and take it from there.

Bit of advice is to stay off google as so much mis information and also out of date. Also easy to self diagnose on google and come up with all sorts wrong.

Try and stay as positive as you can and you dont have long to wait, hopefully, for your appointment.

Let me know if I can help further or if you have any more questions

    kind regards

    ian

  • Thanks for your reply Ian. I am glad my doctor is referring me as I have read a lot of posts on here where people have been dismissed by their GP. I am trying my best not to google as it really doesn't help the worry and comes up with the worst possible situations!

I will update once I've had my ENT appointment!

  • Just an update as I know it's useful for people who are in similar situations.

I had my hospital appointment two days ago - not ENT as originally thought but Oral department. The consultant had a good look at the lump and a bit of a poke around and the main thing he told me was to not lose any sleep over it and it is NOT cancer. He has now referred me to ENT as he says he wants a camera down there to have an even better look and to decide on next steps.

The lump is still slightly annoying but I am just so glad he has told me not to worry! Got my next appointment next week so I'll update after that.
