Lump in armpit / breast

Hi

I don't know what I hope to achieve by posting on the forum but I feel sick with worry and at a complete loss on the 'what ifs' so hoping this helps :(

I found a lump in the breast/armpit (it's where the 2 join together) around 6 weeks ago. It took 3 appointments at the GP before they could feel what I was feeling and finally got my referral to the breast clinic today. He said it's a 2cm lump but feels smooth and mobile. I asked if it's likely to be cyst vs cancer and understandably he cannot answer but said they won't know anything until we have a scan. The lump is tender and painful, I have dull ache pains from the armpit up into the shoulder.

Anyone else experienced similar? I have a 2 year old and a new 10 week old baby so the thought of leaving them behind breaks me - obviously my mind goes 100mph thinking this but I can't help myself.

Apologies if I sound dramatic, my grandmother has just finished skin cancer treatment and my auntie is currently terminal with ovarian cancer so it's around our family a lot at the moment.

Also does anyone know what I should expect at the referral, will I get told that day if it's anything sinister etc?

Thanks in advance everyone, I understand we are all on here for troubling times. Hugs to you all xx

  • Hello Natzztan

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently found a lump. Well done with persisting with repeat GP appointments. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment at the breast clinic.

There's some really useful information on this website about what to expect at your appointment. It's also worth remembering that the vast majority of people who attend breast clinic don't get a breast cancer diagnosis. There could be a number of reasons for the lump that you've found.

If you'd like to chat to one of our team of nurses about your concerns then do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Keep in touch Natzztan and let us know how you get on.
    Best wishes,
