Breast clinic referral fears

I guess I'm looking for anyone with similar symptoms to myself having had an urgent referral to the breast clinic, by my GP this morning.

I've had tender breasts for weeks, but noticed it was far more on the left side. The right is back to normal. The left has a nugget type lump just above the areola. The areola is now darker and sunken in. It's sore and a bit itchy.

Has anyone experienced this, or struggling with the awful wait? Urgent apps. are 2 weeks wait, but they do all tests in one day and can give biopsy results on the day. I think this is quite good. The worry is tough, especially as I'm a lone parent with a 7 year old.

  • Hello, sorry to jump in but I have been referred to the breast clinic after finding a lump a few weeks ago.. I initially waited to see if it would disappear by itself, but after 4 weeks it was still there so I saw gp who also felt it and referred straight away..My appointment is the 10th Dec and I am petrified it is going to be bad.. Stupidly I googled and my very solid unmoving lump seems to indicate nothing good, even the gp wasn't reassuring at all, just said she could feel it too and referred.. I am 43, no history of bc in family, I had clear mammogram 2 years ago for change in breast size so I am clinging on to the hope this will also be clear.. Flitting between being calm and then like today, feeling in a pit of despair.. Anyone had solid unmoving lumps that ended up being fine??

    Hi Catt,

I am so sorry that you are feeling so desperate about the lump that you've found. I am glad to hear that you have an appointment for the breast clinic. There are a number of different reasons for breast lumps and they are not always sinister. We all tend to expect the worst at this stage, but fortunately this doesn't always turn out to be the case.

It is not a good idea to google, especially when you don't have a diagnosis yet. I hate to say this, but I had a clear mammogram the same year that I was diagnosed. I had a lumpectomy followed by Tamoxifen. I had a second bout the following year and had a double mastectomy followed by Letrozole. Still, that was 10 years ago and I am still here and living a fairly full life.

My mother died from secondary breast cancer, so I was terrified at first and, my emotions were all over the place. Most of us experience the feelings that you mention. We also become very tearful. This is not as bad as it sounds, as tearsare a great stress reliever.

I hope that all goes well for you on 10th Dec. You probably won't get any answers for a week or two after your initial appointment, as it takes this time to get the results of your tests that will be taken on your first visit.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for taking the time to respond.. 2 bouts of cancer, really !? And you're still fighting fit.. That's incredible and gives hope.. I was told I will have a mammogram again initially, where I will get preliminary results and then we will go from there.. I just wish wasn't so near Xmas as I am struggling to keep it together..

I will keep you posted though and once again thank you very much for responding xx

    Hi Catt,

There is never a good time to be going through something like this, but Christmas must be one of the worst. Still, by getting embroiled in Christmas preparation should be a good distraction from the wait for your test results.

I shall be thinking of you on 10th December and shall keep my fingers crossed for good results.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

I found a small painful lump in my armpit, hasn't gone down so I went to GP this morning. At the appointment the GP checked my breasts and said I have a lump at the base of my left and two lumps in my armpit. She has referred me for an emergency breast screening and talked about having the lump at the base of my breast removed. I wasn't really taking anything in as soon as breast cancer was mentioned.

I'm feeling stressed out and cannot stop crying, don't really know what to think.

How long should I expect to wait for my appointment and then what should I expect from that appointmnet.

    THANKS!!

  • Sadly bad news.

They think I caught it early. Lymph nodes looked fine on scan, but obviously will know once they remove them. Lumpectomy on 17th. Mri on my breasts before then to check nothing else

  • Aww! I'm so sorry.

Did they discuss the size, type and grade of cancer. Either way, it's so good they caught it early and great that a date for surgery has also been suggested.

It looks like you and I are in this together. I recently started another chat on newly diagnosed. Perhaps we could touch base there. Either way, I'll try to support you through this and virtually hold your hand all the way x

  • Will join your chat there x

  • Hi Annie I got my breast clinic appointment approx 2 weeks after seeing my GP.  I can understand the worry and stress. I found writing down my feelings helped and keeping busy. I had my appointment on 26th of November. I had a mammogram,  ultrasound and fine needle aspiration done they believe mine is benign not cancer but getting a core needle biopsy done to double check what it is. Everybody is different so depending on your lump you might not need all of the tests. When your letter comes through they will give you more information. The doctors and nurses were amazing at the breast clinic I went to. Hope this helps.
