Appointment Advice

Hello, I visited my GP this morning as I have had a rash on one breast and slight pain for a few weeks. Whilst there he examined me and found a small pea sized lump. Ironically nowhere near the rash which is after all that skin based.

anyway I’ve been referred to the local urgent breast service which is a ‘one stop’ service.

theyve said I need to allow a good few hours and I assume I’ll have a scan of some description but there isn’t much else on the hospital page about what other tests they’ll do.

Just wondering what to expect? Thanks

  • Hi I'm awaiting an urgent breast clinic appointment and was told by my GP, depending on symptoms, they will likely do an ultrasound on the breast, a mammogram (usually if over 35 years old) and if they see fit, a biopsy. Not sure if one stop clinic in your area means biopsy results on the day. I was told here in Edinburgh that is the case, so you know by the end of the day what the issue is. The wait is tough. Good luck!

  • Hi Budgie32 & [@MiniMum81]‍

The breast clinic will consist of a physical exam of the breasts, a mamogram and/or ultrasound. Depending on what they see on this you may be advised to have a biopsy. Biopsy results take 7-10 days to come back from the Lab. Only then will the doctors and you will know what it is they are dealing with.

Hope that helps and good luck x

    Hi MiniMum,

Budgie has outlined the normal first visit to the breast clinic. Not everyone is fortunate enough to get their biopsy results there and then. Most have to wait 1-2 weeks for their test results. This is always a stressful time, so try to distract yourself from the wait by keeping yourself busy.

I hope that all goes well for you. There can be quite a bit of waiting around for the different tests.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks for the info. The wait is very difficult. Folk say not to worry as it won't change the outcome, which is true, but very hard to distract from.

  • Thank you kindly for the info. Perhaps my GP meant my biopsy results will show on the day whether it's nothing to worry about or if tests need to be done?

I'm planning something for every day until I get an appointment to distract myself. I can imagine Budgie (sorry I don't know how to tag others) is feeling similar nervousness.

I'll post when Ive had appointment and again, hope everything goes well for you Budgie. x

  • Hi MiniMum81

I had my biopsy on 13th August and got the results on the 19th Septmber (I was told 5-6 weeks).  I personally have not met anybody who has had the biopsy done and received the results of the biopsy on the first day.  On the day I got my results I was then told my lumpectomy would be on 1st October.

If this is what they do for you then fantastic, as the waiting really is the worst part.  Once you know the results you can either relax and carry on with life or focus on the next stage of treatment.

Good luck with your appointment and hope all goes well for you. Rosie

    Hi Rosie,

I was like you. I had my first diagnosis of breast cancer 10 years ago and, my second bout was the following year. In both instances I had to wait a week for the results.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks for the info.

my appointment is next week, the GP booked it there and then so not too a long a wait really.
