Going out of my mind

I'm going out of my mind.
Went to see my GP on Friday about a mole I've had on my stomach since birth. Been dodgy looking for a while but I've only just had the bottle to go and get it looked at.
GP said she isn't concerned but has referred me to see a dermatologist under the 'Two Week Wait' referral scheme.

I suffer with anxiety anyway, and it's absolutely eating me away at the moment.
I don't know what I'll do if it's melanoma/cancer.
I have a beautiful 3 year old girl that I'm so frightened about leaving.

absoloutely petrified :(

  • Hi Jamie,

sorry I meant it was Tuesday 19th - my mistake, I wasn't clear.

That's great that your appointment has come through, keep us updated with how it goes! Next week does feel like a lifetime away

  • Just had my appointment with the dermatologist.

She said it was irregular in colour and believes it to be atypical. She said she doesn't believe it's a melanoma but is going to schedule a biopsy in the coming weeks to be certain that it was just atypical. Fingers crossed the results from that come back clear but I think the outcome looks good.

let us know how you get on tomorrow Jamie :)

  • I'm glad that the dermatologist doesnt seem too concerned! Fingers crossed it's all good for you!

Will keep you updated tomorrow afternoon. Wish it was sooner!

    best wishes

  • Hi Elizabeth

have just come out of my dermatology appointment. I luckily had my appointment with the head of the clinic which was reassuring.
    She's 99% certain it's just an atypical/benign mole.
Same as you, getting it removed next Tuesday for certainty and as she was worried about my health anxiety, for my piece of mind.

Obviously anything can happen, but definitely feeling reassured and more relaxed.
Do you know when your appointment is yet?

  • Hi Jamie,

that is good news that your dermatologist said she was 99% sure it was an atypical mole and it's great you're getting it removed on Tuesday!

I haven't heard when my appointment for removal will be, she said it'll be anytime in the next 2-3 weeks or so.

I wish my dermatologist said she was 99% sure mine was just atypical like yours did, thinking back to her labelling mine as irregular and atypical makes me overthink it all again! But I suppose she wouldn't have said she doesn't believe it to be a melanoma if she had any inclination that it was cancerous..

glad you're feeling more reassured and relaxed now!

  • Hi Elizabeth!
    she was very reassuring!
I very much doubt that they'd put their neck on the line so much, especially after looking with the dermacope, if they weren't so sure.
My Dermatologist said the same as the wonderful AngieT - I've had the mole all my life, and it's looked quite irregular for about 5 years, not changed in 5 years as well, so if it was something sinister, my body would have told me by now.
Did say she wanted to get it removed for my own piece of mind (suffer with anxiety quite bad anxiety) and even offered to help me get booked into some CBT sessions for my anxiety.
I'm guessing my mole removal will likely be before yours so I will keep you updated!

    best wishes

  • Hi, aware this post was from a while ago but reading both these stories, it is so similar to mine. I found a mole in my belly button and paid to see a private dermatologist same day. He just wanted me to monitor it but I've had it removed. Any update on your story? I hope you're well :)

  • Hi Cat,

Of course I can supply you with an update.

I had my mole removed early last year and after analysis it was found that it wasn't cancerous but it was a dysplastic nevus, or atypical mole. They have a small chance of turning cancerous in the future but as it was removed there was nothing to worry about!

I hope this helps, and good luck! Please keep us updated :)
